Douglas C-54 Skymasters were built at Santa Monica and Chicago, the latter plant accounting for two-thirds of total production. The C-54 was the US Army's first four-engined transport and was the military version of the DC-4A, which had been put into production at the time of America’s entry into the war.

Lockheed P-38 Lightnings awaiting their unsupercharged Allison C15 engines on an open-air assembly line at Burbank, California in 1942. The majority of the 667 P-38s ordered for Britain were repossessed by the USAAF following America's entry into the war.

Two dozen RAF Lockheed Hudsons at Lockheed's Burbank factory early in 1941. The original order for 250 Hudsons was completed by December 1939; deliveries were first made by air across the Atlantic. Note the absence of turrets: these were fitted on arrival in the UK.

The civil Beech Model 17 made an ideal fast communications aircraft for the wartime USAAF and Navy and around 270 were used for that purpose from 1941. Here a batch of 11 UC-43s are seen at Wichita, Kansas.
