“During 1941 the earlier marks of Spitfire were being outclassed following the emergence of a new German fighter - the Focke-Wulf 190, which was capable of a superior performance at medium and high altitudes.
“The new Rolls Royce Merlin 61 two stage, two speed supercharged engine of 1600 H.P. was installed in a modified Spitfire V airframe, and this development brought about certain changes to the lines from the early Spitfire marks. The increased size of the engine resulted in a lengthening of the fuselage. This combination was designated the Mark IX.
“One of the first units to receive this variant was 611 Squadron in July 1942, featured here in my painting. The Spitfire IX gave 611 the chance to fight the FW190 on equal terms, and no time was wasted"... Gerald Coulson. Hawker Fury Replica G-BKBB. Sir Sydney Camm designed the Fury as the first R.A.F. single seat fighter capable of sustaining speeds in excess of 200 mph. These aircraft were fitted with Rolls Royce Kestrel IIS engines, developing 525 HP at 14, This replica was constructed as near as practical to the original by Westward Airways Ltd. 1984-1988 and is finished in the colour scheme of No. 43 Squadron R.A.F. in 1931. It is fitted with a Rolls Royce Kestrel MK V engine.
