    Meanwhile, the utilitarian Polikarpov Po-2 trainer/general-purpose biplane below was rebuilt to flying conditions by enthusiasts at a Russian flying school last year. Unfortunately, though, reports Grapevine correspondent Andrew Alexandrov from Leningrad, “They didn't manage to rebuild all the flying characteristics of the original”.

    Supermarine Spitfire XVI TE184/G-MXVI, the fourth and latest Spit totally rebuilt by Trent Aero, makes its first post-restoration flight from East Midlands Airport on November 23, 1990. Owned by Myrick Aviation, TE184 has been reconfigured as a high-back Spitfire in just 2yr, by a team working under project coordinator Alan Purdy. The aircraft took to the air in the hands of Rolls-Royce pilot Dave Moore, who reported no problems. Built in 1945, TE184 was displayed at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum in the Seventies before being acquired by the late Nick Grace and subsequently passing to Myrick.

    Newly-restored Yak-11 G-OYAK takes off from Earls Colne for its second flight on November 18, 1990, piloted by Air Vice-Marshal John Allison and with owner Eddie Coventry in the back seat. Rebuilt over the last 3 1/2 yr by a volunteer team under the supervision of Phil Parish, G-OYAK was produced under licence in Czechoslovakia; it was last used in 1946 by the Egyptian Air Force. The restoration has been sponsored by BAC Windows, of which Coventry is group chairman.
