  • Squeezed out of last month’s issue by our first report on the Canadian Halifax recovery, this picture was too good to leave unused On August 29, 1995, as part of America’s celebrations to mark the end of World War Two in 1945, a group of California warbirds including B-25, F4U, TBM, F4F and SNJ (pictured) took off from the carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) off the coast of Oahu in Hawaii.

    English Electric Lightning F.3 XR749, which once overtook Concorde during trials over the North Sea, was unveiled at Teesside Airport on September 28, 1995 following a 20-month restoration by owner Ken Ward and Wally Douglas. One of only three F.3s restored, out of just five surviving examples, XR749 was given a home at the airport after plans to display it at the South Yorkshire Air Museum or in the garden of Ken’s “local" fell through.

    Halifax A.VII NA337, all four Hercules engines still on their mounts, in its specially-built recovery cradle on the surface of Lake Mjosa on September 10, 1995. The tail section broke off in the crash and was recovered separately by salvagers Dacon Sub Sea A/S.

    NA337’s nose section. Warbirds of Norway’s Oyvind Ellingsen, who took the picture, reports that “When I was there they found a parachute in the fuselage, and the silk was not rotten. They have also found the tail-gunner’s Thermos, with a bit of coffee still in it!

  • A recently-erected plaque commemorating the Halifax’s crash in the lake on April 24, 1945, and listing the aircraft’s crew. Of the six men aboard, only tail gunner Flt Lt Thomas Weightman survived, the others reportedly drowning when their dinghy overturned.

    A valedictory photograph of DASA-operated Messerschmitt Bf 108 Taifun D-EFPT, destroyed with the loss of two lives at Johannisthal, Berlin, on September 9, 1995. Contrary to reports appearing elsewhere in the media, it was indeed D-EFPT that was destroyed, not Lufthansa’s all-silver ’108 D-EBEI.
