D.Middleton - Airspeed's Fleet Shadower
The sole example of this type completed (N1323). Although the AS39 seems to have a different colour scheme in this view, this is simply due to the fact that the yellow undersides and outer ring of the fuselage roundel appear dark owing to the use of orthochromatic film.
This view of the Fleet Shadower shows how jury struts provided support for the folded wings.
The AS39 runs up its engines at Portsmouth in 1940. Note how the Pobjoys are well spaced across the span.
With little need for streamlining, the Fleet Shadower was not the most pleasing of aeroplanes to behold, but from his position in the nose the observer was provided with an unrestricted forward view.
