Meteor / G.41

   - "Метеор" I с двигателями W.2B/23 и откидным фонарем;

Gloster Meteor

In May Forum Mr. P. H. Green says he's never seen a photograph of the first production Gloster Meteor Mk. 1 (EE210/G). He has now, and complete with U.S. Army Air Force insigne which he queries. This photograph was taken at Muroc (now Edwards A.F. Flight Test Centre) in the spring of 1944. If anyone is interested they can locate another view of EE210/G on page 158 of test pilot John Grierson's book Jet Flight (Sampson Low, Marston & Co., London 1946). Grierson's photo is a three-quarter front view in which the U.S.A.A.F. fuselage insigne can just be seen to the right of the test pilot's head. [This view does not show the whole aeroplane-ED.] In Jet Flight Grierson states (on p. 145) that he flew the exchange Meteor for the first time at Muroc on 23rd April 1944. In the background of my photo are (right to left) two Army Air Force Douglas A-24 Dauntless dive-bombers, a Vultee BT-13A Valiant basic trainer and the tail of a P-51 Mustang. Don't ask me for the block numbers.
The Gloster G.41, DG 204/G was the third of eight prototypes of what were to become the Meteor. DG 204/G was the only one to be fitted with two 1,800lb s.t. Metropolitan Vickers F2 axial turbojets originating from the work of Dr A. A. Griffith at the RAE. Readily distinguishable from the other prototypes by its underslung engine nacelles, DG 204/G first took to the air on 13 November 1943, a little over eight months after that of the first G.41, a DH Goblin-powered machine, on 5 March 1943. DG 204/G's brief flying career ended catastrophically on 1 April 1944, when it was lost following an in-flight engine disintegration, fatally injuring its pilot Sqn. Ldr. Douglas Davie.
F9/40 DG204 had two MetroVick F2 axial jets. Illustrated tied down for early ground runs, it first flew on November 13, 1941.

The Gloster Meteor initially sported two teardrop-shaped engine nacelles (as seen left), creating separation and drag, as discovered in wool-tufting trials in 1944. Altering the shape so that longer nacelles (as right) gave straighter junctions and reduced pressure gradients delayed separation and added up to 50 m.p.h. (80km/h) to the aircraft’s maximum speed.

When the rebel FAeA Meteors landed at Montevideo in Uruguay in the wake of the failed June 1955 military coup, the Uruguayans had little first-hand experience of jet-powered fighter aircraft, its own most advanced fighter being the North American F-51 Mustang. Naturally, the Uruguayan Air Force made the most of the opportunity to explore the most modern military aircraft then in South America. The four Meteors that escaped to Uruguay - I-031, I-058, I-094 and I-098 - were all comprehensively inspected by the Uruguayans, as seen here, before being returned to Argentina the following month. The Uruguayans received their first jet aircraft in the shape of the Lockheed T-33 trainer in the late 1950s.
Rebel-operated Meteor I-043 at the FMA in Cordoba during the September revolution. This aircraft was originally built as part of an RAF batch and given the serial EE540, although it never served as such and was diverted to become part of the FAeA consignment in June 1947. It was written off in an accident in May 1956.
Believed pictured during flight test in the UK, I-065 was destroyed in a forced-landing in 1958.
Meteor I-066 taxying at an airfield some time after the September 1955 revolution, but still bearing the somewhat crude markings applied by hand to the aircraft by the rebels. The “I” designation was originally applied to denote "Interceptor", but when the type was modified in the late 1950s to carry rockets and bombs for the ground-attack role, the designation was changed to “C” for Caza (Fighter). Thus I-066 became C-066.

The latter was one of the most active air bases during the Revolucion Libertadora in September 1955, although none of the Meteors - rebel or loyalist - ever operated from it during the revolution.
Following the failure of the attempted military coup in June 1955, four of the Meteors operated by the rebels escaped to neighbouring Uruguay, where I-094 is seen here being inspected by Fuerza A ere a Uruguaya (Uruguayan Air Force) personnel.
I-099, the second to last of the batch. Unlike the vast majority of Argentine Meteors, it had an unblemished flying record.
Argentina became the first export customer for the Gloster Meteor when it ordered 100 F.4s in May 1947, the first 50 to be examples from RAF stocks, the remainder to be provided new from the factory. The first arrived at Buenos Aires by ship that July. The last, I-100, delivered in July 1949, is seen here at Base Aerea Comandante Espora, south of Bahia Blanca, in the late 1950s.
