Nene Viking. По заказу Министерства снабжения Великобритании 107-й серийный самолет был оснащен турбореактивными двигателями Rolls-Royce Nene, а также отличался усиленной обшивкой крыла, металлическими рулями высоты и шасси иного типа (с четырьмя одноколесными основными стойками). Изменения коснулись также топливной системы и кабины пилотов. 6 апреля 1948 года пилот Дж. Саммерс поднял Type 618 Nene Viking с аэродрома Уисли - это был первый британский реактивный транспортный самолет, поднявшийся в небо. Самолет развивал максимальную скорость 753 км/час, а на крейсерской скорости 632 км/час преодолевал 555 км. 25 июля 1948 года (в честь 39-летия полета Луи Блерио через Ла-Манш) самолет Nene Viking с 24 пассажирами на борту совершил перелет из Лондона в Виллакубле, под Парижем, всего за 34 мин 7 с, т.е. почти в два раза быстрее, чем стандартный поршневой Viking компании BEA. Был также побит рекорд скорости, установленный на линии Лондон - Париж самолетом Supermarine Spitfire. Испытания успешно продолжались несколько лет, в 1954 году Nene Viking вновь оснастили поршневыми двигателями (модель Mk 1В), присвоили имя "Lord Dundonald" и передали в качестве грузового компании "Eagle Aviation". Списан самолет был в 1962 году.

Britain's first pure jet transport aircraft. The Vickers Nene Viking was powered by two 5,000lb s. t. Rolls-Royce Nene Is which gave a cruising speed of 393 m.p.h. G-AJPH was later converted to standard Viking configuration.

Destined to become the world's first purely jet powered transport, this Vickers Viking had originally been delivered to the Ministry of Supply with the military serials VX 856 as a high altitude test bed for new types of engines. Following a switch to civil registration, G-AJPH, the machine initially flew powered by its two 5.000lb s.t. Rolls-Royce Nenes on 6 April 1948. Converted back to its original Bristol Hercules-engined form, G-AJPH ended its flying career serving with the British independent Eagle Aviation.

It was not all scheduled arrivals and departures at LAP in the late 1940s; among the numerous pistonliners could be found the occasional item of real exotica, including the Rolls-Royce Nene-engined Vickers Viking, VX856, the world’s first pure-jet-powered transport aircraft, which John Stroud snapped at LAP on August 31, 1948.
