Honeywell International is to consolidate its testing operations at Phoenix, Arizona. Among the aircraft moving south from Paine Field, Seattle, will be Convair 580 N580HW (c/n 2), the oldest Convair still flying.
Although based at Palmerston North in the southern part of North Island, Air Freight NZ operates one of its two freight configured Convair 580s from Auckland on night parcel flights. This aircraft, ZK-FTA, is fitted with a side cargo door, and prior to conversion was a Convair 340.

While visiting some of the more out-of-the-way locations during the sales tour, the author took the opportunity to photograph some of the exotica to be found at local airports, including Air Algerie Convair 640 7T-VAO, named El Oued, seen here being refuelled at Zarzaitine in eastern Algeria. Originally built as a piston-engined Convair 440 (c/n 440-409), it was re-engined with Rolls-Royce Darts in December 1968 and later went to the USA as N866TA.

The prototype Model 240 had a new lease or life by becoming the flying test-bed ror the 2,925-e.s.h.p. Allison Model 501s (YT38s - predecessors or the YT56-A-3s which power two M.A.T.S. Convair YC-131C Samaritans). Renamed the TurboLiner, N24501 flew at San Diego on 29th December, 1950, to become the first U.S. turboprop transport aircraft, cruising at 310 m.p.h. with an a.u.w. or 41,790 lb.

Napiers' Convair 340, with Eland engines, made its first flight on 4th February and is now continuing its trials at Cranfield .
First of the 41 leading airlines operating Convairliners to discard piston engines for turboprops is REAL S.A. of Brazil - seventh largest commercial transport operator in the world. Britian secures the initial $2,000,000 contract through the enterprise of D. Napier & Son Ltd., whose 3500-e.h.p. Conversion was completed in two months, and G-ANVP made her first flight with the new engines on Thursday, 9th February 1955.

Representing the new generation of turboprop airliners at McCarran Field, along with a Lockheed Electra and a Fairchild-built Fokker F-27, was Convair 440 N440EL (formerly PP-AQE with VARIG), converted by Canadair in early 1959 to carry a pair of Napier Elands, to become a 540.

By the late 1960s the Convair CV-580 was Allegheny's workhorse on feeder routes from the smaller communities. N5806, seen here, had previously served the airline in both CV-540 and CV-440 configurations

Frontier Airlines was one of several Locals to upgrade its piston-engined Convairs to 580 configuration by replacing the 340’s Pratt & Whitney R-2800s with Allison 501D turboprops and incorporating an enlarged fin and a modified tailplane. This 580, N73127, was photographed at Colorado Springs in October 1968.
