The mammals will spend five years on loan from the People's Republic of China to Toronto Zoo, before moving to Calgary Zoo for a further five years. The freighter arrived in Toronto from Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport via Vancouver after almost 15 hours in the air. FedEx is the official transport services provider for China's pandas and the Canadian flight was the sixth time it has flown the creatures since November 2000. The in-flight menu for the animals included up to 100kg (220 lb) of bamboo, 150kg (331 lb) of bamboo shoots, 50kg (110 lb) of apples and 15kg (33 lb) of fresh water. For the flight the aircraft, dubbed the 'Panda Express', was adorned with large decals of the animal on each side of the forward fuselage.

It depicts four historical scenes from the history of air cargo in Germany, including the Berlin Airlift and another of a Boeing 747 freighter being loaded with Volkswagen Beetles for export. The start of German's air cargo industry goes back to a flight by a Harlan Monoplane between Berlin-Johannisthal and Frankfurt-Oder on August 19, 1911, in which copies of the Berliner Morgenpost newspaper were carried. The MD-11 freighter is seen leaving Manchester International airport on November 4, 2011.

The freighter is one of three of the type operated by the carrier, the others being OH-LGD (c/n 48513, ex N513AY) and OH-NGA (c/n 48542, ex B-16101), the latter being acquired from Eva Airways and entering Nordic service on June 27, 2012. Nordic Global commenced operations in August 2011 and is owned by the Finnair Group - both OH-LGC and -LGD were previously flown by Finnair. OH-LGC is seen at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport in Finland on June 9.

A significant electronic system development has seen the use of computers to present information to aircrew on cathode-ray tube displays. The McDonnell Douglas MD-11 instrument panel features six CRT displays for presenting operational, navigation, engine and systems data. Automatic system controllers in the overhead panel monitor and configure fuel, hydraulic, electrical and environmental systems. Dual flight management systems display units are shown in the forward centre console, with a third unit, which is also used by maintenance personnel to check the condition of flight deck systems at the rear of the console. -
