Air International 1983-01 / ??? - A very different Corsair /Veteran & Vintage/
The "Vought-Goodyear F2G", as this unique aircraft is now officially designated, made its first appearance at the 1982 Reno Air Races and has the potential to set time-to-height records. Photographed here by Frank Mormillo over Chino, the Corsair is flown by Steve Hinton and Jim Maloney, who shared in the restoration/modification project.

Powered by a 4,000 h.p. Pratt & Whitney R-4360 28-cylinder radial, the Budweiser Light Vought-Goodyear F2G Corsair bears little resemblance to any other Corsair. With cut down wings and cockpit streamlining, owners Steve Hinton and Jim Maloney, both directors of the California-based Planes of Fame Museum based at Chino Airport, hope to make an attempt on the time-to-climb record for piston aircraft currently held by an F8F Bearcat. In addition, the aircraft is scheduled to compete in this year's top air racing events.

Of the ten Super Corsairs built at the end of World War Two (out of 428 ordered to counter the Japanese kamikaze menace), only three survive. In addition to these two, Race 74 was recently donated to the Crawford Museum in Cleveland by collector Walter Soplata, and is with Bob Odegaard for restoration to static display condition for the museum.

Вариант XF2G-1 являлся попыткой превратить Corsair в эффективный перехватчик, способный защитить американские корабли от атак японцев. Машина была снабжена двигателем R-4360 и могла быстро набирать большую высоту для перехвата вражеских разведчиков. Новая силовая установка потребовала внести хорошо заметные изменения в конструкцию капота. Но запуск в серию истребителя Grumman F8F Bearcat положил конец работам по F2G-1.

F2G Super Corsair. Компания "Goodyear" модернизировала три FG-1A собственной постройки в вариант XF2G-1, оптимизированный для действий на малых высотах. На них установили моторы Pratt & Whitney R-4360-4 мощностью 3000 л. с., доработали фюзеляж и фонарь кабины. Первый полет XF2G-1 выполнил 31 мая 1944 года. За прототипами собрали пять F2G-1 аэродромного базирования, но контракт еще на 403 самолета аннулировали с окончанием Второй мировой войны. Морской эквивалент F2G-2 был построен в количестве 10 экземпляров, массовое производство отменили в связи с окончанием войны.
