L.Peacock - B-36: Convair's "Big Stick" /Warbirds/ (2)
The Project "Tom-Tom" RB-36F (serial 49-2707) accompanied by one of the two RF-84Fs (51-1848/1849) that were modified to permit wingtip to wing-tip hook-ups.
An "aluminium overcast" on an overseas deployment in 1951, approaches its base in the tropics. Unusually, this B-36 is almost totally devoid of markings, and its precise identity is unclear.
A B-36H in full "warpaint" for service with the Fifteenth Air Force, whose badge can just be seen on the fin, behind the wingtip. This is a B-36D (conversion of a B-36B) from the 92 nd Bomb Wing.

A B-36J from the final production batch, which ended at s/n 52-2827. With an anti-radiation white finish on its undersides, this is in fact a B-36J-III Featherweight, with all armament removed save the pair of tail guns in an effort to achieve better high-altitude performance.
A Convair RB-36H takes off from Convair’s Fort Worth division, where all of the big bombers were built.
Underwing jet pods, first introduced on the B-36D to boost performance, were a feature of the RB-36E conversions of the B-36As.

The NB-36H made a number of flights carrying a nuclear reactor to test shielding, but the planned X-6 follow-on, with a nuclear power plant, posed problems that proved insoluble.
