  • A number of ex-SAAF Cessna 185s are being offered for sale by Armscor. Around ten were in service in 2006 when their maintenance records were destroyed in a fire and the aircraft subsequently withdrawn. Armscor has received clearance to dispose of the Cessnas, but without full maintenance records the South African Civil Aviation Authority will only allow them to be registered in the restricted category.

  • Thanks in part to the National Airways Corporation (NAC), the Total Eclipse Very Light Jet made its African debut at AAD 2012. The aircraft can carry four people more than 1,150 miles (1,850km) at 400mph (650km/h).

  • One of the stars of AAD 2012 was the South African Air Force's C-47TP 6840 'Gooney Bird', painted in Silver Falcons aerobatic team colours. The aircraft was launched as an official support element to the team just before the show. It performed with the six PC-7 Mk IIs of the Silver Falcons at AAD - its first public appearance in the new colour scheme. The SAAF has 11 C-47s in service.

  • State-owned acquisition, support and disposal agency Armscor is offering Pilatus PC-7 Mk II Astra and Cessna 185 aircraft for sale. Approximately 20 PC-7 airframes are surplus to SAAF requirements - out of the 60 purchased in 1993, five were lost due to attrition and 35 are having their avionics upgraded and should be delivered in March 2013. If the PC-7s are not sold (they require engine work and avionics improvements) they may be cannibalised for parts or scrapped.

  • National Airways Corporation (NAC) displayed the Bell 407AH on the type's African debut. The surveillance version is commercially certified and can be armed with seven 2.75-inch M260 rocket pods and a Dillon 7.62mm M134MT mini-gun. Options include chaff and flares, a cargo hook, crew armour and rear sliding doors.

  • One of the more unusual sights at AAD 2012 was the debut of the prototype C-Wolf amphibious bush aircraft, under development by South African start-up VliegMasjien. Work on it began in January 2011 and first flight is scheduled for 2013. A first order has been received. The company claims the C-Wolf is Africa's first amphibious aircraft and its ADEPT Airmotive 320T to be the continent's first locally developed general aviation engine. This 320hp (236.8kW) unit can run on petrol, avgas or biofuel.

  • The Pacific Aerospace P-750 flew impressive displays during AAD 2012, dropping parachutists and showing off its short take-off and landing capabilities (in less than 800ft [240m]). The aircraft is being promoted for a variety of purposes, including skydiving (it can drop 17 skydivers at 12,000ft [600m] and land within ten minutes), geosurvey and cargo. It is powered by a PT6A-34 turboprop. A single example is in use by the United Nations in South Africa.

  • Eurocopter delivered a new EC145 to the Namibia Police Air Wing at a ceremony on the second day of AAD. The aircraft will be stationed at Eros Airport in Windhoek, where it will also be maintained. Eurocopter Southern Africa is providing pilot and engineer training in Germany and South Africa.
