Two views of Scout D 5555, one of three experimental examples modified to take the 110 h.p. Clerget rotary engine in place of the standard 80 h.p. Gnome or le Rhone. The Clerget required a larger-diameter cowling, and 5555 was also fitted with a prominent domed spinner - the aircraft later provided test data for the Bristol M.1A's engine installation.

A presumably Bristol-built B.E.2d - distinguishable by the gravity fuel tank under the upper port wing - in the snow at Filton. In the background is a Bristol Scout D with an A17-- serial, and Bristol F.2A A3317.

Another view of Bristol F.2A first prototype A3303. Note the high longeron line, and the lower wing-root endplates in place of a centre section - compare this picture with that of second prototype A3304. A3303 began life with vertical radiators either side of the fuselage, but these restricted the pilot's vision so much that they were abandoned in favour of a single frontal radiator. Like A3304, it had B.E.-style wings.

The second Bristol F.2A Fighter, A3304, at Filton in December 1916. It was modified with downward-sloping upper longerons (for better pilot visibility and to provide more space for fuel tanks and ammunition) and the addition of a lower wing centre section instead of root endplates - features adopted on the redesignated F.2B. A3304 still retained its B.E.-style wings, though, and was fitted with a 150 h.p. Hispano-Suiza engine and circular radiator.

A5140, the second of four Bristol M.1Bs built, at Filton in December 1916. Although allotted to the RFC in France in February 1917, it never went there, joining 111 Sqn in Palestine instead. In the background of this picture is what appears to be a B.E.2d fitted with B.E.2e-style unequal-span wings.
