Do.24

   - Do 24K, разведчик и бомбардировщик для Нидерландов; К-1 швейцарской постройки с моторами R-1820-F52, К-2 голландского производства с моторами R-1820-G102;
   - Do 24N, спасательный самолет для Люфтваффе с моторами R-1820-G102, без бомбового вооружения;
Голландские Do 24K с весны 1939 г.

Dornier Do 24

THE DORNIER FLYING BOATS
Long-range Over-water Machines for Reconnaissance, Bombing and Patrol
By H. F. KING

Do 24

The first batch of Do 24s to leave the Dornier works at Friedrichshafen were to the order of the Dutch Government who required them for service in the Dutch East Indies. The type has been built under licence in Holland for some time, and must be presumed to have passed into service in the German Air Force in fair numbers.
In general layout the machine resembles the Do 18, being a semi-cantilever monoplane with "sea-wings" to give lateral stability on the water.
The wing consists of a rectangular centre-section which carries the three engines, and is supported above the hull on two sets of inverted-V struts. To the extremities of this central portion are attached the trapezoidal outer panels.
The flap arrangements are something out of the ordinary. On the centre section is a single split flap which can be adjusted to diminish the take-off and landing speed, while the outer panels carry slotted ailerons of high aspect ratio which also function as flaps during landing.
The hull is broad in the beam and comparatively shallow, the upper portion being of semi-circular formation, except at the forward end. Starting at the bows as a fairly sharp vee the bottom gradually flattens out. It has two steps, the rear one ending as a knife edge, and there are the characteristic Dornier longitudinal steps running parallel with the keel. Structurally the hull is quite straightforward and is flush riveted.
Sweeping up from the rear step the hull changes section and forms the base for the tailplane and the rear turret. Unlike the Do 18, the Do 24 has twin fins and rudders, the latter being statically and aerodynamically balanced and having servo flaps. The tailplane is of metal construction and is braced on each side of the hull by a single strut.
The sponsons or "sea-wings" are used as fuel tanks; there is additional tankage in the wing.
The interior of the hull is subdivided as follows: Behind the gun-turret in the bows (this may be retracted for rough water operation) is a long cabin for the pilots, the navigator and wireless operator, and aft of this are the living quarters with rest bunks. A short distance behind is the midship gun-turret which, in combination with similar turrets in the bows and stern, commands a wide field ol fire. The turrets may be assumed to have power drive, but in the Dutch version at least carry only one gun apiece.
The possibility has been mentioned by the manufacturers of fitting three 20 mm. shell-guns, presumably on Oerlikon mountings. The maximum bomb-load, which is carried externally below the wings, is 3,300lb., and can be composed of bombs of various kinds, including the anti submarine variety.
Holland’s Do 24s are powered with three Wright Cyclone G radials, but it is likely that B.M.W. 132 Dc or Bramo Fafnirs will have been specified for the German machines, though mention has been made of one version with liquid cooled engines. These would be DB601s or Junkers Jumo 211s. In any case, the engines are installed in line abreast, the central one being slightly higher than the other two. Precise data on German versions of the Do 24 are not available, but the following figures were issued by the manufacturers not long before the war: Span, 88ft. 7in.; length. 72ft. 1 1/2 in.; height, 19ft. 3in.; wing area, 1,162 sq. ft.; all-up weight, 29,700lb.; top speed (according to engines fitted). 195-210 m.p.h.; ceiling. 18,500ft.; and range, 2.170 miles.

A fine view of a Do 24 being towed to shore by a motor launch. Visible in the background is an Italian Cant Z 501 seaplane. The Z 501 was used mainly as a reconnaissance aircraft and she sports a white fuselage and engine nacelle with red-orange wings for high visibility when forced down at sea. A close look will reveal gun turrets on the engine pod and on the fuselage behind the wing.
Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine personnel in the motor launch tow this Do 24T-1 toward the jetty. This Do 24 is armed with a large 30mm MK101 cannon in the dorsal fuselage turret; a gun that had a relatively low rate of fire but packed an extremely large punch when its rounds struck their targets.
A last minute check of the center engine requires these Luftwaffe crew members to ascend to the top of the wing of the big seaplane as the motor launch continues its towing. Notice how the Dornier rides evenly through the white-capped water as it heads for the section of the harbor set aside for seaplane takeoffs and landings.
The centre engine of the Do 24 is set rather higher than the outboard units. It will be noted in this view that the bow turret has been retracted.
With the wake of the tow launch showing white in the foreground, this Dornier Do 24 is pulled out toward the breakwater of the harbor for another patrol. The pilot and the navigator can be seen with their heads out of the cockpit, wearing the cork-filled "sausage" type life jackets that were later replaced by inflatable rubber life vests.

As two engines turn over at a low idle, Dornier Do 24 KK+UP coasts slowly along. German floatplane and seaplane bases in the Mediterranean theater of operations were located along the coasts of southern France, Italy, Greece, in the hundreds of small islands between Greece and Turkey and also in several North African ports.
As all three BMW engines roar, this big Do 24T picks up speed for takeoff, building an ever-growing wave of spray beneath her bow. The three BMW engines were capable of giving the pilot over 3,000 horsepower on takeoff. More than once these flying boats were so overloaded with downed airmen that the full power of the engines could not get them into the air.
The Dornier lifts awkwardly out of the water on her way to a long patrol. The nose turret of this aircraft appears to be unarmed, but the dorsal turret on the fuselage carries a 30mm cannon and the rear turret is fitted with a 7.92 mm MG 15 machine gun.
A close look at the boat hull of this low flying Dornier reveals that she has just recently been re-caulked on all seams. Because of the punishment the hull took on every landing, it was common for the seams between the panels on the hull to spring leaks, so caulking on a regular basis was a necessity.

Taken from the pilot's side cockpit window, this photograph shows to advantage the wing undersurface with its fence-like radio antenna, pitot-static tube, aileron hinges and aileron and landing flap mass balances.
After a long patrol the crew of this Do 24T gathers on the stub wing with their equipment and baggage to await the launch that will take them to the shore. This photo should provide the viewer with ample proof of the stability of the Dornier-designed stub wings in keeping the big seaplane on an even keel, even when the entire crew gathers on one of them.
Crewmen help a wounded and exhausted pilot out of the fuselage hatch to the stretcher braced on the flying boat's spine. These big seaplanes did a tremendous job picking up downed airmen and sailors adrift at sea wherever and whenever they could be picked up.
As the rest of the crew of this Do 24 debarks after a patrol, a Luftwaffe sergeant-crewman stands at attention on the bow and gives his report to his superiors. The crewman closest to the engine nacelles has just dropped his life jacket through the open cockpit hatch and the camera has caught it in mid-air.

An excellent shot of a big Dornier Do 24T-1 as she receives a maintenance checkup on her three BMW Bramo 323R-2 radial engines. These big radials put out 1,000 horsepower each on takeoff. Interesting is the manner in which the cowling engine access panels folded upward, while the integrally-built access stairs folded down from the side of each engine.

Luftwaffe engine mechanics dressed in thick insulated coveralls prepare to service this Do24's BMW engines. The large oil cooler radiator is very evident in this photograph, serving as a footrest for the Luftwaffe mechanic on the left.
This crewman carefully straddles the top of the rear turret of this Do 24T-1 as he replaces a curved pane of plexiglass some 20 feet above the ground. The rear turret of the Do24 was often not fitted with any armament, but when it was, it carried a single MG 15 machine gun.
Here, mechanics service a beached Do 24T-1 of an unidentified patrol unit. The big seaplane bears the white fuselage band of an aircraft operating in the Mediterranean theater. It is possible that this big Dornier is based in southern France or Italy. Note the rear tie down hawsers on the tail of the airplane below the rear turret.

In order to try and keep the Tp 24 in flying condition, Flygvapnet groundcrew obtained parts from various other types, including the Saab B 17, Heinkel He 115 and even J 22 fighter. It was a losing battle, however, and the Tp 24 was retired in the summer of 1951.

Just before leaving for Pollensa, on May 30, 1944, Major Pombo and other members of the EdA group shake hands and exchange salutes with their Luftwaffe instructors. Noteworthy are the towel rack-type FuG 101 antenna under the wing; Spanish red-yellow-red roundels and rudder flag; ‘KK+LX’ factory code.

After celebrating a religions ceremony, a priest blessed the Do 24s at Pollensa. Maybe this was the moment when the aircraft received the 'virgin' names. Fourth Do 24, EC-DAB, is clearly visible in the background.
One of the first Do 24T-3s is lifted by the Pollensa's crane shortly before being moved to the base's apron.
Fine study of EC-DAB anchored off Pollensa. Noteworthy are the white fuselage bands and upper wing disks with red crosses, as well as overpainted former fuselage factory codes.

Anchored in Pollensa Bay in 1952, HR.5-8 sporting a surprisingly fresh paint scheme. The lettering 'Virgen de la Luz' is visible just behind the front fuselage roundel.
In the early 1950s the white bands with red crosses became unnecessary and they were not repainted. In some cases, they even tried to cover them with brush-strokes of the increasingly scarce green paint. As can be seen from this picture of HR.7-10 ‘51- 10’ 'Virgen de la Paloma’.
Between May 12-14,1953, a group of EdA flight and maintenance members was sent to Karouba in Tunisia on board HR.5-11. It is seen here about to take off from Saint-Mandrier for Karouba. By this time the fuselage white bands with red crosses were almost completely worn out, as seen on HR.5-11 '51-11' 'Virgen de los Ojos Grandes'.
From May 1954 the Do 24s received 'DO-24T-3-XX' serials, as on this, the eleventh EdA Do 24. Note 'Virgen de los Ojos Grandes' lettering on nose and '51-1' unit code.
During 1953 a new scheme was adopted. HR.5-6 '51-6' 'Virgen de la Esperanza', was one of the Do 24s on which experimental paints were unsuccessfully tested. The new scheme comprised an overall ‘bottle green' finish with yellow bands along the fuselage and on the wingtips.
At the time of its return from Spain, the Do 24 was in plain metal finish, but when first operated by the Spanish Air Force, these boats had a dark green finish, as shown below, with distinctive yellow stripes.
In the summer of 1958, 58 Escuadrilla was formed with the four Do 24 survivors. The seventh example, wearing the 58 Escuadrilla's colours and ‘DO-24-T3-7', received the code ‘58-1’. Engine cowlings were yellow painted.
Some time after the creation of the 58 Escuadrilla, the four Do 24s began to show the 'SAR' insignia on their noses, as on ‘58-2’, ex HR.5-11, anchored at Pollensa.
In the summer of 1964 a new overall silver livery began to he applied to the four remaining Do 24s. The scheme included fuselage and wingtips black-outlined yellow bands and the 58 Escuadrilla badge and big 'SAR' lettering. Three of the four Do 24 s are illustrated at Pollensa: '58-2' is still in the green overall scheme.
In April 1965, 58 Escuadrilla was disbanded and replaced by a new unit, 804 Escuadrilla. The four Do 24s were devoid of unit markings and the black-trimmed yellow areas were slightly modified.
