
Douglas DC-6, C-118 Liftmaster и R6D
Принимая во внимание удаленность ТВД, на которых пришлось воевать американцам во Второй мировой войне, командование авиации было весьма заинтересовано в получении транспортных самолетов с большой дальностью полета. Высокие характеристики C-54 подвигли ВВС Армии США заказать тому же разработчику самолет большей дальности, получивший обозначение Douglas XC-112A и поднявшийся в воздух 15 февраля 1946 года. К тому времени военные не были уже так сильно заинтересованы в новом самолете. К тому же он был не дешев. В итоге машину переработали для эксплуатации на авиалиниях, новый вариант получил обозначение DC-6.
Самолет сохранил крыло от своего предшественника, но имел удлиненный на 2,06 м герметизированный фюзеляж, позволивший увеличить максимальную пассажировместимость до 86 человек (стандартными вариантами стали салоны на 48 и 52 кресла). Первые машины были оснащены звездообразными ПД R-2800-CA15 Double Wasp мощностью 2100 л. с. (1566 кВт), а первый из 50 лайнеров, заказанных авиакомпанией "American Airlines", поднялся в воздух 29 июня 1946 года. В эксплуатацию DC-6 начали поступать с апреля 1947 года, первоначально на линии авиакомпании "American Airlines" Нью-Йорк - Чикаго. Всего построили 174 самолета DC-6.
В 1948 году компания "Douglas" приступила к разработке варианта еще большей вместимости - с фюзеляжем, удлиненным на 1,52 м, и оснащенным двигателями R-2800-CB16 мощностью 2400 л. с. (1790 кВт). Сначала был предложен транспортный вариант DC-6A с двумя грузовыми люками по левому борту (за крылом и перед ним), без иллюминаторов и с усиленным полом. Первый полет нового самолета состоялся 29 сентября 1949 года. За DC-6A последовал практически такой же пассажирский самолет DC-6B, но с более мощными двигателями R-2800-CB17. В воздух новая машина поднялась 2 февраля 1951 года. Первые серийные машины имели 54-местный салон, но вскоре была представлена компоновка высокой плотности, которая позволяла разместить до 102 пассажиров.
Гражданские DC-6 строились одновременно со 166 машинами, приобретенными ВВС и ВМС США, частично они привлекались военной Авиатранспортной службой США. Те машины, что эксплуатировались ВВС США, имели обозначение C-118A и могли перевозить 74 пассажиров, либо 12 247 кг, либо 60 носилочных раненых. 29-й по счету DC-6 был достроен в VIP-варианте для президента США Гарри С.Трумэна и получил обозначение VC-118 "The Independence". Самолет имел салон на 24 пассажира, в ночном (спальном) варианте - на 12 пассажиров, а также отдельный кабинет. На вооружении ВМС США состояли 61 самолет R6D-1 и четыре R6D-1Z, причем последние - в варианте VIP (в 1962 году данные самолеты получили новые обозначения - соответственно C-118B и VC-118B). Другие силовые ведомства также приобрели данные машины - в основном бывшие гражданские самолеты.
Последним из гражданских вариантов был DC-6C - конвертируемый грузопассажирский самолет, в основном такой же, как DC-6A, но со стандартными иллюминаторами. В общей сложности было построено 704 гражданских DC-6 и военных XC-112A/C-118/R6D. Среди них были и два DC-6B, переоборудованных специально для компании "Sabena" - они имели откидывающуюся хвостовую часть для упрощения погрузки/выгрузки крупногабаритных грузов. Несколько DC-6B были дооборудованы подфюзеляжным баком емкостью 11 356 л для огнегасящей смеси. Такие машины активно применялись в Канаде и США во время сильных лесных пожаров или при угрозе их возникновения.
DC-6 стал ярким представителем надежного и эффективного авиалайнера с поршневыми двигателями, которому вскоре на смену пришли самолеты с первым поколением турбовинтовых и турбореактивных двигателей. После же того, как DC-6 стали массово сниматься с авиалиний большими компаниями, на них сделали ставку более мелкие авиаперевозчики, а отдельные машины продолжали летать вплоть до 2009 года.

In June 1980 it joined Aero B as YV-293C before being bought by Trans-Air-Link on August 21, 1984. All of the aircraft are used for freight carriage, primarily to and from the Caribbean island chain.

Gladiator joined the PAA fleet in May 1954 and served with the airline until it was sold to the Portuguese Air Force in August 1961.

It is seen here at Beirut in November 1955 wearing the airline’s mid-1950s colour scheme of white upper fuselage, bare-metal undersides, blue and yellow alternating cheat lines and a stylised diagonal tricolor with a circle of five stars on the fin.

Douglas C-133As (P. & W. T34 turboprops) will first supplement and eventually replace C-118As by flying N. and S. Atlantic non-stop. The 1700th Test Squadron (Turboprop), Kelly A.F.B., Texas, is already conducting ATLD personnel in C-133A flying and maintenance courses.
