Hawker Siddeley (BAe/Avro) 748 и Andover

Also powered by two Rolls-Royce Dart turboprops, Avro 748 prototype G-APZV made its first flight on June 24, 1960.
The first two 748 prototypes, G-APZV and, nearest the camera, G-ARAY, which made its first flight on April 10, 1961. The 748 was a state-of-the-art design, conceived along “fail-safe” principles, whereby if a structural failure occurred in flight, other parts of the aircraft’s structure would take the load until a safe landing was made.
The prototype 748, G-APZV, has its engines run up during its early trials programme. The aircraft made its maiden flight on June 24, 1960, from Woodford in the hands of Avro chief test pilot Jimmy Harrison, marking the manufacturer’s bold decision to re-enter the civil market after decades of producing exclusively military aircraft.
Good use is once again made of the 748’s forward freight door during a stop at Ondangwa in South West Africa (Namibia), as the tour's chief pilot Harry Fisher looks on during the second half of the sales tour.
Southwest Airways DC-3 ZS-DJZ clatters overhead at the airstrip at Rosh Pinah before landing. The 748 took off from Windhoek before the Dakota, but overtook it en route and had landed, shut down its engines and disgorged its passengers by the time the DC-3 arrived.
INSET Probably the most remote airstrip of the whole African tour was Rosh Pinah in South West Africa, an important settlement for the mining of zinc, lead, copper and diamonds.
Wearing its South African registration, ZS-IGI, and with the legend “Hawker Siddeley 748” replacing its Air Afrique titles for the South African part of the sales tour, the 748 offloads its behatted passengers, and all the possessions they need for a year in the nearby copper and lead mines, at Ondangwa, South West Africa (Namibia).

With everything down, G-ARMX is a moment away from settling on to the grass at Lympne. The 748’s flap system was a particular source of pride for the Avro design team, the difference between the type’s "clean" and "all-down" stalling speeds being a remarkable 30kt. At full 27 1/2° deflection, the rear edges of the flaps bent down an additional 30° to give a final drag increase.
Skyways Coach-Air 748 G-ARMX trudges across the grass in front of the control tower at Lympne before another flight to the Continent. The type was more than able to cope with the lack of a concrete runway at Lympne, although incidences of a 748 getting bogged down in mud after heavy rain were all too common.
Now with the subsidiary Skyways Coach-Air titles applied to the fuselage, G-ARMV awaits another flight to the Continent at Lympne in May 1964. In July the following year the aircraft was written off in a landing accident in bad weather at Lympne. Miraculously, all passengers and crew escaped with minor injuries.

Although passengers boarded the 748 using the port rear door, the type also incorporated an extremely useful freight door, measuring some 4ft 6in (1-37m) high and 4ft (1-22m) wide, on the port side of the forward fuselage. Here a Conveyancer-Scott electric tractor delivers a somewhat meagre load to a Skyways 748 at a travel fair at Biggin Hill.
The 748’s extremely neat "petal" cowling arrangement provided excellent access to the type’s two-stage Dart engines.

The prototype Hawker Siddeley Coastguarder, G-BCDZ, adapted from an HS 748, made its first flight at Chester on 18th February, landing at Woodford.

The first flight was made al Cranfield on 4 September 1987 of the prototype MacAvia-BAe 748 Turbine Tanker, a conversion sponsored by California-based MacAvia International to adapt the aircraft to the fire-fighting role. The BAe 748 converted was acquired from Eastern Provincial in Canada and. now registered G-BNJK, has been fitted with a 2.000-US gal (7 571-l) ventral pannier tank that can be removed and refitted al short notice. The cabin remains available for the aircraft to be used as a freighter and it can be reconfigured for passenger carrying if not required for fire-fighting for prolonged periods. Modification of the BAe 748, which arrived at Cranfield in mid-April, included strengthening of the fuselage frames and installation of reinforcing structures and strongpoints. Cranfield Aeronautical Services, a subsidiary of Cranfield Institute of Technology, is responsible for the design, modification, flight testing and certification.
