Speed over 100km - 19.9.37 Wittman Special "Chief" R14855; 383.386 km/hr, Steve J Wittman. The photo of Wittman with 'Chief in 1937 shows the tiny 13 ft wingspan not apparent in the side view. The same basic formula with many modifications was used for the Wittman Special racers from NR12047 'Chief Oshkosh' in 1931 to 1954 after which NX14855 as 'Buster' was retired to the Smithsonian Institution and preserved. The fuselage length at 19 ft 3 in. was 6 ft more than the wingspan at this time, although wings of 18 ft and 16 ft span were fitted at different periods in its long racing life. Loaded weight ('Buster') 358.6 kg (789 lb).
