Военно-транспортный самолет. Четырехмоторный цельнометаллический моноплан с трехкилевым (с третьей серийной машины) оперением и убирающимся шасси. Спроектирован в КБ фирмы "А.В. Роу" под руководством Р. Чедвика с использованием крыла и мотоустановок тяжелого бомбардировщика "Ланкастер". Опытный образец будущего "Йорка", самолет Авро 685, впервые поднялся в воздух 5 июля 1942 г. Серийное производство было начато в 1944 г. на заводе "Авро" в Манчестере, с октября 1945 г. переведено в Йидон. Производство "Йорков" осваивалось также фирмой "Виктори эйркрафт" в Канаде. Всего выпущено 258 экз. (в т.ч. 181 -до октября 1945 г.), из них 209 военных.
Экипаж - 5 чел., 12 - 24 пассажира (в разных вариантах). Двигатели "Мерлин" 24. Вооружение отсутствовало.
Военные модификации "Йорка" использовались британскими (с 1943 г.) и канадскими (с 1945 г.) ВВС.
Выпускались три основных военных варианта:
- грузовой, строился в 1944 - 1945 гг.;
- пассажирский на 24 - 30 мест, изготовлялся только в 1944 г.;
- комбинированный (12 мест плюс груз), постройки 1945 - 1948 гг.
Уже опытные образцы начали эксплуатироваться Королевскими ВВС с 1943 г. Все первые серийные самолеты предназначались для перевозки высшего командного состава и имели комфортабельные пассажирские салоны. Один из них был изготовлен как персональный для премьер-министра Великобритании У. Черчилля (на смену переоборудованному "Либерейтору") и получил собственное имя "Аскалон". Им же пользовался король Георг VI.
Впоследствии выпускались в основном грузовые машины, обеспечивавшие перевозки из Великобритании в Африку, на Ближний и Дальний Восток. С апреля 1944 г. они обслуживали регулярную линию на Каир. В послевоенный период строилась и гражданская пассажирская модификация (в т.ч. и на экспорт).
Значительное количество машин этого типа задействовали при организации "воздушного моста" в заблокированный советскими войсками Западный Берлин. Массовые перевозки грузов осуществлялись в июле - октябре 1948 г. до разрешения этого кризиса. В 1948-1952 гг. "йорки" перебрасывали войска и различное снаряжение в Сингапур для нужд группы английских войск, воевавшей с местными повстанцами в Малайе.
Производство "йорков" прекратили в апреле 1948 г. С вооружения Королевских ВВС последний самолет сняли в марте 1957 г.
