The first British retracting undercarriage was fitted on a Bristol racing monoplane in 1922. Note the cycle spoke-braced spinner
The small wing span of the Type 72 was accentuated by the large-diameter fuselage. The spinner is incomplete.
The large diameter monocoque fuselage was braced internally by a spider's web and the bulkheads formed supports for the wing-root fairings.
