Eurocopter's UH-72A Lakota is itself a development of the EC145. The company is competing a variant of the Lakota for the US Army's Armed Aerial Scout competition. Sikorsky and AVX Aircraft are also offering designs for this requirement.

American Eurocopter is using EC145 N959AC as a demonstrator for the US Army Armed Aerial Scout programme.

Eurocopter's EC145 was developed from the BK117. The new design added a larger cabin, modernised avionics and an enhanced rotor, all features which helped to significantly enhance the aircraft's performance.

American Eurocopter has delivered five H-72As to the US Navy Test Pilot School based at NAS Patuxent River in Maryland.
