The 1st Fighter Wing based at Langley AFB, Virginia was the first frontline F-22 wing in the US Air Force and achieved full operational capability on December 12, 2007. On May 3, 2011 its fleet was grounded.

In 2010, the F-22 force had to be inspected due to poor drainage in the cockpit. The water-run off and drain designs, intended to maximise stealth, resulted in 14 Raptors needing water-damaged parts replaced.
