Geoff Wakeham has sent in three photos taken at the School of Flight Deck Operations at Gosport.
The normal method of moving aircraft around, at least for the smaller ones, was to press-gang anyone who happened to be standing around. But on a busy flight deck, spare hands were not always easy to find and trials were carried out on small mechanised tow-bars in February 1953.
That in this photograph shows one such device. Unfortunately, no name appears on the vehicle (or serial!) but it does seem to conform to standard practice by having a 'prototype' marking on it. Unless, of course, the 'P' means something else in tow-bar language.
The Firefly AS.5 or AS.6 is A2161, but this is one of the aircraft that are so far unconnected with their original serial.

The second type of mechanised tow-bar was manufactured by Lancing Bagnall, well-known for its mechanical handling equipment like hoists, fork-lifts and similar pieces of kit. It is similar in concept but more streamlined.
The Firefly does not show its A-number but among the graffiti relating to paint specifications on the fin and rudder can be seen the number WD878, which was at Gosport at one time.

Unconnected with the deck-handling trials is a photograph of A2269, formerly Firefly AS.5 VT373, showing flight deck trainees practising releasing the arrester cable from the arrester hook. It appears to have a numerical code but it is not consistent with the aircraft's former service and seems to be one painted on by the School of Aircraft Handling.
