  • A Sea Fury FB.50 of No.860 Squadron of the Royal Netherlands Naval Air Service after landing aboard the carrier Karel Doorman

  • Регистрационный номер: N2053

Tim Bishop has sent in this photo of a Battle, N2053 of No.2 Anti-Aircraft Co-operation Unit. It is unusual in that there are few examples of 'nose art' on a Battle. There is a painting of Popeye on the nose, just forward of the cockpit.

  • A heavily-armed reconnaissance aircraft for its time. It appears to be a Brandenburg FD with its curious inward-sloping struts. The observer can use one of the guns to fire forward over the propeller arc and measures have been taken to ensure that he does not fall out!

  • No caption on the back of this one but it is obviously a Polikarpov I-16 hanging from the roof of a military museum. This is a reminder; always put a copy of a caption plus name and address on the back of any photo sent in. The paper tends to become separated from the photographs!

  • Регистрационный номер: J9084

Wapiti J9084 was tested on floats at Felixstowe as there was a standing requirement for RAF army co-operation aircraft to be able to don sea-boots when required. This was most frequently used in the Sudan where No.47 Squadron operated from the Nile as well as the local airfield. Report F/32 gave the Wapiti seaplane a good report but only a few used floats, including No.84 Squadron at Shaibah.

Sunderland V PP107 of No.230 Squadron in a lush dispersal at Koggala, Ceylon, in 1945.

  • A Heinkel He 60C at a German seaplane training school. Although pseudo-civilian in appearance, this type of training unit was turning out pilots and observers for the Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine. The exhaust area seems odd but this may be caused by an open inspection panel.

  • From Fred Dickie comes this shot of a US Navy executive aircraft. It is a Vought Kingfisher, we think an OS2U-2, belonging to the Commander, Patrol Wings, Atlantic Fleet. With that placard on the side, he probably had little chance of making a surprise inspection.

  • Регистрационный номер: A-407, A-758, N8209

A Sopwith Baby and a Thomas-Morse S-5 share a parking area at a US Navy seaplane base. The Baby is marked N8209 and also carries the USN serial A407. The 'N' is another example of how non-prefixed RNAS serials acquired the letter 'N' on the principle that all naval aircraft had them! In fact it is 8209, N8209 not having been built. It went to the Royal Canadian Navy and gravitated south at a time when the USN was looking for suitable aircraft. The S-5 is A758.

  • The Douglas O-43A was an army co-operation aircraft that entered service in July 1934. Five earlier O-43s (ex-Y1O-43s) had provided for trials and 24 O-43As were later ordered. The badge on the side of the fuselage indicates that this one belonged to Wright Field.

  • Регистрационный номер: P132

A German L.F.G. Roland D VIb single-seat fighter, but not all it appears to be. The number on the rudder, P132, indicates that this aircraft is at Dayton, USA, for trials and is, presumably, war booty.
Some VIb were fitted with modified ailerons and a 200-h.p. Benz engine.

  • Регистрационный номер: J9565

Minus its 37mm COW gun is the Westland F.29/27 at an early stage in its development. J9565 first flew in December 1930 and was later fitted with a two-bladed propeller and a larger fin. The gun fired upwards at about 45°, the intention being to break up formations of bombers and make them easier to pick off.
