The Barnwell B.S.W. Mk I, registered G-AFID, crashed at Whitchurch on August 2, 1938, killing its designer.
Frank Barnwell was a brilliant designer and was responsible for the design of many Bristol aircraft. In 1938 he designed the single-seat BSW Mk 1 which was built for him by Airwork and first flown on July 17, 1938 with a 28 h.p. Scott Flying Squirrel engine. It crashed on its second flight on August 2 and Barnwell was killed. The inquest recorded a verdict that the pilot was inexperienced in flying low-powered aeroplanes.
