The Helstar rotary wing maritime UAV that was first flown July 18, 1990, was probably ahead of its time. The project was shelved in 1992 partly because of an inadequate automatic landing system and partly due to a lack of interest from the Israeli Navy.

The IN withdrew its support for the IAI Helstar rotary wing UAV system in 1992. Secured to the small flight deck of an IN FMB, the Helstar was equipped with a nose-mounted El-Op MSIS stabilised optical payload and an unspecified belly mounted radar.
