One of the three ICAR Universal Acrobatics. These all-red aeroplanes, owned by ARPA, made up the ‘Red Devils’ aerobatics team, that was present in all major Romanian aviation shows held in the 1930s.

Регистрационный номер: YR-ACK YR-ACK was originally captioned as a IAR-23mb, built by ICAR, at Pietersburg in South Africa, possibly during 1934.
YR-ACK is refered to as a ICAR Universal with a Gipsy Major engine, though the SH14 was more usual. Three of these did successfully fly to Cape Town in 1935 in 73 hrs 5 mins flying time - and also returned safely. The first three pilots named above also made this journey, together with G.Olteanu, G.Jienescu and mechanic A.Stengher. Just as the above identification had been typed we received a report from Harm Hazewinkel confirming details of YR-AAP and giving the owners as ARPA (Associatia Romana Pentru Propaganda Aviatiei). YR-ACK however is quoted as a I.A.R. 23 with a 340hp Hispano-Suiza 9QA engine (not ICAR-built) which does seem to fit the original caption. Further contributions or photos seem to be called for here. -
