  • Регистрационный номер: C67, C69, N6634

The nearest aircraft of this trio is a Sopwith 2F.1 or Ship's Camel, N6634; the others are the F.1s C67 and C69. The parent Sopwith company built only one batch of 50 production 2F.1s (N6600-N6649), from which deliveries began in the late autumn of 1917. Of these, at least seven, apart from N6634, were at Manston on January 11, 1918.

Seen at the RNAS War School, Manston is Sopwith F.1 Camel F4983, built by Clayton & Shuttleworth within the batch F4974-F5073; was completed about October 19, 1918. It was therefore a very late arrival in the wartime RAF, but was given the same form of markings as the other Manston Camels in the accompanying photographs.

  • This Sopwith F.1 Camel is probably C67 or C69, taken at Manston. Deliveries from the British Nieuport & General Aircraft Company Ltd (C1-C200) did not start until the week ending January 12, 1918, and C67 and C69 were probably delivered towards the end of March 1918. The photographs that include these aircraft were therefore taken after the formation of the RAF.

B3922 was delivered late in July 1917 under the Sopwith company's first RFC contract for Camels. Of the 250 Camels numbered B3751-B3950, 104 were delivered to the RNAS. B3922 was one such, and went to No 8 (Naval) Squadron in August 1917. By January 11, 1918 it was at the RNAS War School, Manston, where this photograph was taken; but it was also photographed, in the same markings seen here, at Dover.

Boulton & Paul delivered F1520 in late July 1918. Here it is seen at Manston wearing markings that are similar to those of B3922, with personal (?) embellishments on the cowling panels and wheel covers.

  • This RNAS lieutenant is possibly Charles F. A. Wagstaffe, from whose album this selection has been made. The pilot is in an F.1 Camel built by Ruston, Proctor & Co Ltd, whose emblem can be seen in the small circle on the fuselage flank fairing.
