When the author was invited to fly a captured Macchi C.202 on Sicily he narrowly avoided the result shown: this Daimler-Benz-powered C.202 forced-landed in the Western Desert.

Left, Spitfire IXs of 1435 Sqn at readiness on Safi Strip in 1943. With a better performance than the Spitfire Vs previously used by the squadron, the IXs were better suited to intercepting incoming Bf 109 fighter sweeps.

The captured Caproni Ca 100 used by the author for low-level tours of Malta: note the long-span lower wings. The type was developed from the D.H.60 Moth - its lineage is evident from the shapes of wing and tail. This picture was taken on September 29, 1943, while the Ca 100 was in the hands of a SAAF Boston unit at Gerbini, Sicily.
