Ryan VZ-11RY (позднее XV-5A и XV-5B Vertifan): по внешнему виду самолет представлял собой обычный среднеплан с убирающимся шасси и двухместной кабиной, в которой экипаж размещался бок о бок на катапультных креслах класса "ноль-ноль". Но, на самом деле, это был экспериментальный самолет для отработки концепции "вентилятор в крыле". Два больших вентилятора располагались горизонтально между лонжеронами крыла, а еще один, меньших размеров, был установлен в носовой части для управления по тангажу в вертикальном полете.
Силовая установка состояла из двух ТРД General Electric J85-GE-5 тягой по 1206 кг, мощность которых могла использоваться для привода вентиляторов на режиме висения или создания тяги в горизонтальном полете. Переход от одного режима к другому производился с помощью поворотных дефлекторов над вентиляторами.
Первый из двух прототипов XV-5 взлетел 25 мая 1964 года. Всего обе эти машины к октябрю 1966 года налетали 338 часов. Один самолет был потерян в апреле 1965 года, а второй получил повреждения в октябре 1966 года. В 1967-1968 годах он был восстановлен и доработан и, получив обозначение XV-5B, использовался для исследований НАСА до 1971 года.

XV-5 оказался не слишком удачным самолетом - переход от вертикального к горизонтальному полету оказался слишком сложным. Представленный на снимке XV-5A в темно-зеленой окраске потерпел катастрофу в 1965 году.
