A.Ord-Hume - Vari Viggen
Howard Levy took this photograph of Burt Rutan’s VariViggen
Burt Rutan and wife Carolyn in the very roomy cockpit of the VariViggen.
Picture shows the constant-chord canard and the reduction of leading edge sweep half way out along each wing. Note also the central cut out in the trailing edge for propeller clearance.
Although the pilot's view is excellent whilst in level flight, the canard obscures downward vision in nose-high attitudes.
The 150 h.p. Lycoming O-320-A2A four-cylinder horizontally opposed aircooled engine drives a Ray Hegy fixed-pitch wooden propeller.
The hinged nose cone provides access to the nose gear.
Carolyn Rutan in the driver's seat.
The military type cockpit and panel with trim, reflex, radio and intercom switches all on the central column.
