J.Lake - Gloster Javelin /Aircraft profile/
Gloster Javelin F(AW).1 XA628/'B', 87 Squadron, RAF Bruggen, Germany, circa 1957. The 'pen-nib' jet-pipe fairing was fitted to all aircraft powered by Sapphire Sa6 engines to overcome rudder buffeting.
Gloster Javelin F(AW).2 XA806/'P', 89 Squadron, RAF Stradishall, Suffolk, circa 1958. The most noticeable external difference between the F(AW).1 and F(AW).2 was the asymmetric radome, which was hinged.
Gloster Javelin F(AW).5 XA664/'P', 5 Squadron, RAF Laarbruch, Germany, circa 1960. Externally similar to the F( AW).4, the F(AW).5 carried an additional 125 Imp gal of fuel in each wing.
Gloster Javelin F(AW).7 XH794/'L', 64 Squadron, RAF Duxford, Cambridgeshire, circa 1958. Powered by Sapphire Sa7s, the F(AW).7 had an extended rear fuselage to reduce base drag.
Gloster Javelin F(AW).8 XH966/'X', 41 Squadron, RAF Wattisham, Suffolk, circa 1963. This was the final production variant and the first type to be powered by the Sapphire Sa7R, which had limited reheat.
Gloster Javelin F(AW).9R XH888/'B29 Squadron, RAF Akrotiri, Cyprus, circa 1965. It is illustrated with an in-flight refuelling probe, under-wing drop tanks and Firestreak air-to-air missiles.
In spite of its new designation, the Javelin F(AW).9 was not a new variant built on the production line. It was basically an F(AW).7 converted to take the Sapphire Sa7R with reheat. This aircraft is seen in the markings of 23 Squadron.
