J.Viner, R.Riding - Doctor in the sky
Photographs depict Dr Whitehead Reid's Renault-engined S.E.5 G-EBCA.
Another portrait of the doctor in the cockpit of his Renault-powered S.E.5.
BRITAIN'S FIRST POST-WAR PRIVATE OWNER: Dr. Whitehead Reid, of Canterbury, registered both his machines as long ago as 1922 - the Avro-Renault on March 31, and the S.E. 5 on October 20. As he was, and still is, totally unconnected with the aircraft industry, he can justly claim to be our first private owner. The photograph shows the method employed for taxying the S.E.5 out "under its own power" - a practice that would be frowned upon today.

Further view of the doctor flying his Avro 548 at Bekesbourne. Avro 548 G-EAFH was destroyed at Southport on May 31, 1935 following a low-level aerobatic display over the beach.
