XN723 was the first production Lightning Mk 2. It crashed at Hucknall on March 25, 1964, following fire in one of the engines. The pilot ejected safely.

T. MALCOLM ENGLISH’S plate depicts Lightning T.5 XS452 "BT” over the North Sea shortly before 11 Squadron’s disbandment in April this year. The T.5’s distinctive bulged cockpit is evident in this view.

The author closes up on Flight’s photographer in Lightning T.4 XL628 in September 1959. This aircraft was lost in the Irish Sea one month later, Johnny Squier surviving a long immersion.

The author formates on a photographic Meteor in the prototype Lightning T.4, XL628, on its first flight, on May 6, 1959. Its subsequent crash into the Irish Sea, on October 1, 1959, resulted from fin collapse at high Mach number.
