The navy currently has four RQ-4A Global Hawk BAMS Demonstrator or BAMS-D unmanned aircraft in its inventory. The BAMS-D has been deployed in the US Central Command's area of responsibility since 2009.

The navy is planning to begin flight testing the MQ-4C Broad-Area Maritime Surveillance (BAMS) unmanned aerial vehicle in the autumn and achieve initial operational capability by the end of 2015. The service plans to use 68 MQ-4Cs and 117 manned P-8A Poseidon aircraft to perform maritime patrol and surveillance activities in a more persistent but economical manner than has been done by the ageing P-3 force.
