The Ukrainian Air Force is introducing a new digital camouflage to its Mikoyan MiG-29 Fulcrums, upgraded Sukhoi Su-25M1 Frogfoots, Su-27 Flankers and Aero Vodochody L-39C Albatros. The scheme is seen on Su-27S '100' blue (and, in the distance, '101' blue), both of which took part in the recent Aviasvit 2012 show at Kiev-Gostomel Airport.

Rockwell B-1B Lancer 86-0120/'OT' of the 337th Test and Evaluation Squadron is the second example of the heavy bomber equipped with the Integrated Battle Station. The aircraft is seen at Dyess AFB, Texas, on October 22, 2012. The other IBS-equipped Lancer is based at Edwards AFB, California, for trials of the system. IBS includes four new multi-function colour cockpit displays, replacing monochrome units, and a central integrated test system, and will enhance crews' situational awareness.

The final flight by an Armee de I'air (French Air Force) Dassault Mirage F1CT took place on October 16, 2012. The aircraft was 226/‘118-QS', formerly of Escadron de Reconnaissance 02.033 'Savoie', which departed Base Aerienne (BA) 118 Mont-de-Marsan for storage at BA279 Chateaudun in northern France. The aircraft returned to France in September after participating in the final deployment of the type to N'Djamena International Airport in Chad, as part of Operation Epervier. The aircraft is pictured on June 22 while being prepared for the deployment. A total of 55 F1CTs served with the air force, all of which were converted from the F1C-200 air defence version by adding ground attack capabilities to produce a multirole tactical fighter.

GSPA03, the first production NHIndustries NH90, assembled at the Eurocopter facility at Albacete, is seen on October 16, 2012, before starting initial engine tests shortly after being rolled out of the final assembly line. The helicopter will be the first to be delivered to the Fuerzas Aeromoviles del Ejercito de Tierra (FAMET, Spanish Army Aviation) in 2013, along with three others due to be handed over during next year. The two prototypes for Spain (GSPA01 and GSPA02), assembled at Marignane in France, will remain based at Albacete for flight tests for some time after GSPA03 (c/n 1264) is delivered, but they will also eventually join the FAMET's NH90 fleet. Spain has 38 NH90s on order, while options held for a further seven may be exercised after 2015.

The transport is the third for Qatar and completed its first flight on September 20, 2012. A fourth is in production. No contract for the second pair of C-17As was announced, although Qatar revealed on March 26, 2009, that it intended to order them by the end of that year.

Bell AH-1W SuperCobra BuNo.165449/'MM-28' of Marine Light Attack Helicopter 778/A (HMI-A-773/A) was at Fort Worth Alliance Airport, Texas, on October 23, 2012 wearing a new MARPAT (MARine PATtern) digital camouflage, similar to that of the Marines Corps Combat Utility Uniform worn by the service's personnel. The helicopter is understood to be the only aircraft currently painted in the scheme, but others may follow if the trial is successful. It is reported to be three times harder to see than the standard camouflage pattern used on the AH-1W.

Shaanxi Y-8C B-217L is one of the first two delivered to Aviation Militar National Bolivariana (Venezuelan Military Aviation), the second using the ferry registration B-218L. Both were noted on their delivery flight at Kunming Changshui International Airport on November 7, 2012. Venezuela ordered eight Y-8Cs in a $300 million deal signed in early 2011. The aircraft feature avionics, electrical, oxygen, lighting and environmental control systems modified to Venezuelan requirements. Both departed China in a basic white-wash scheme, although part of the camouflage underneath is visible on the nacelles and fin. Crews from Grupo Aereo de Transporte 6, based at Palo Negro, Aragua, have undergone training on the aircraft in China.

Two of the three remaining VC10C1Ks in service with No. 101 Squadron left RAF Brize Norton, Oxfordshire, for the final time on November 7, 2012. The two aircraft were XV106/'Y' and XV108/W (seen here), which leaves XR808 painted in special anniversary colours as the last operational C1K. Final resting place for both aircraft is Bruntingthorpe Aerodrome in Leicestershire, where XV106 arrived at 1056 hrs and XV108 at 1115 hrs. There they will have useable parts removed before the airframes are scrapped. No. 101 Squadron retains six VC 10s in service, comprising the sole C1K, four K3s and a K4, and will do so until the type is retired next year.

The 80th Flying Training Wing at Sheppard AFB, Texas, is working to install new Martin Baker Mk US 16T zero-zero ejection seats in its Northrop T-38C Talons to increase the overall safety of the training aircraft. The first full class to use the upgraded aircraft conducted their first flights on October 26, 2012. By then two aircraft (including 66-4379/'EN' of the 90th Flying Training Squadron 'Boxin' Bears', seen here) had been re-equipped with the new seat. Both are currently used for pilot instructor training and introduction to fighter fundamentals courses, but as more Talons are modified they will be flown by students in the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training Program run by the wing. All of the Talons should be upgraded by November 2013.

Seen on the ramp at Houston International Airport, Texas, on October 27, 2012 was NASA's Douglas DC-9-32 N932NA (c/n 47476, ex BuNo 162754). The aircraft was used in the pathfinder role for the Space Shuttle when it was being ferried on top of the Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft, flying ahead of the combination to scout the weather. It also acted as the 'vomit comet', flying parabolic trajectories to allow its occupants to experience micro-gravity conditions. With the retirement of the Shuttle its future is uncertain.

Noted undergoing test flights at San Pablo Airport in Seville, Spain, on October 5, 2012 was Airbus Military C295M 1193/SU-BRU (c/n S-094) destined for the Arab Republic of Egypt Air Force. The transport is the first of a follow-on batch of three ordered on March 24, which is expected to be delivered next year. Egypt already has three C295Ms in service, including one configured for VIP transport. The first arrived in the country on November 18, 2011.

Airbus Military A330-243 Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) MRTT018 arrived at Manchester Airport on October 19, 2012. The aircraft (msn 1248, ex EC-331) flew from Bournemouth Airport, Dorset, where it was converted to MRTT configuration by Cobhams, and will be painted in its RAF colours by Air Livery at Manchester. It will become Voyager KC2 ZZ331 upon entering service. Like several other A330 MRTTs, the aircraft has been flown using only its MRTT 'serial', an EADS/CASA test allocation that allows it to fly on a Permit to Fly rather than the usual Certificate of Airworthiness.

Airbus Military A330-203 EC-332 (msn 871, ex F-WWKU) was towed to the military apron at Getafe AB in Spain on October 30, 2012. The aircraft was rolled out at Toulouse, southern France, in the summer of 2007 for completion as the first EADS/Northrop Grumman KC-45A for the US Air Force. The original KC-X programme was terminated before the aircraft could be converted to tanker transport configuration, and it has been stored outside the Airbus Military facility at Getafe since September 2011. The airframe may still be converted as a tanker transport, possibly as part of the agreement on April 18 between France, Germany and the Netherlands to boost Europe's fleet of air-to-air refuelling aircraft. The three nations announced they would lead efforts to share existing planes or acquire new ones.

At the end of October 2012 the Guardia Civil Spanish Military Police received two new Eurocopter EC135P2+s, HU26-18/'09-312’ (c/n 1007, ex EC-036) and HU26-19/'09-313' (c/n 1031, ex EC-031). Both helicopters have been assembled at the Spanish Eurocopter plant at Albacete. HU26-19 is seen during a test flight on October 18.

Seen departing RAF Mildenhall, Suffolk, on November 2, 2012 as SNOOP56 was Boeing RC-135W Rivet Joint 62-4125 (c/n 18465) of the 38th Reconnaissance Squadron, heading back home to Offutt AFB, Nebraska. The aircraft carries markings for the commander of the 55th Wing and has additional modifications undertaken by L-3 Communications at Greenville, Texas - including a large satcom radome on the upper rear fuselage - as well as being re-engining with CFM International F108-CF-201s. The radome is similar in appearance to that installed on the US Navy's Boeing E-6B Mercury strategic communication aircraft.

Between late September 2012 and early October the Direction generale de I'armement (French Defence Procurement Agency) conducted tests of the Demonstration technologique d'un systeme d'Appontage et d'Atterrissage pour Drones (D2AD, technology demonstration of arrestor hook and landing system for drones) being developed by DCNS and Thales. The automatic take-off and landing system for rotary-wing UAVs tests used the Boeing H-6U Little Bird demonstrator and the French Navy frigate Guepratte, with the helicopter completing around 30 sorties from the warship off Toulon. D2AD comprises of a beacon and deck harpoon on the UAV, and sensors, ship motion predictor and guidance station on the ship. D2AD is a risk reduction project for the future Systeme de Drones Aeriens de la Marine (naval UAV system).

On October 22, 2012 the Enstrom Helicopter Corporation delivered the eighth TH-480B of the year to the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) - ten have now been handed over out of a contracted total of 30. Ten more will follow in 2013, followed by the last batch in 2014. The first two TH-480Bs, which were delivered to Japan in early 2011, have logged a combined total of more than 600 flight hours. The TH-480B will eventually replace the Kawasaki (licence-built Hughes) OH-6 as the JGSDF's primary rotary wing trainer.

A two-seat version of the Shenyang J-15 is believed to have made its maiden flight on November 3, 2012. Dubbed the J-15S, the aircraft is seen on the ground at Shenyang either just before or after the flight on the same day. The maiden sortie reportedly lasted 10 minutes, during which time the aircraft circled the airfield four times. The J-15S is a two-seat development of the J-15 that is expected to operate from the new Chinese aircraft carrier.

Arriving at Toulouse in southern France on October 23, 2012 was Airbus A321-211 D-AZAK (msn 5295) at the conclusion of its maiden flight. The aircraft is the first A321 to be equipped with Sharklets at its wingtips and carries titles on its forward fuselage proclaiming this fact. It is also fitted with a tail-mounted drogue. D-AZAK was built at Hamburg-Finkenwerder and flew to Toulouse, where it will be involved in a six-month test campaign to evaluate the Sharklets on the aircraft. It is expected to be painted in the Airbus 'house' livery.

Boeing 747-446 EC-LNA (c/n 26346, ex N346AS) is seen departing Madrid-Barajas Airport in Spain on October 31, 2012 for Jeddah-King Abdulaziz International Airport in Saudi Arabia, carrying Hajj pilgrims. The aircraft is one of three of the type that has been leased by Pullmantur Air to Garuda Indonesia since September 17/18 specifically for Hajj flights.

Alaska Airlines has painted Boeing 737-890(WL) N559AS (c/n 35178, ex N6067E) in the 'Salmon-Thirty-Salmon II' scheme promoting 'Wild Alaska Seafood'. The scheme is part of a tie-up between the airline and the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute, and is nearly identical to one worn by Boeing 737-490 N792AS (c/n 28887) from 2005 until repainted in the carrier's traditional Eskimo livery in 2011. The new colours were designed by Seattle-based wildlife artist Mark Boyle, and unveiled at Anchorage in Alaska prior to the airliner commencing commercial services on October 5, 2012.

On October 29, 2012 the first ATR 72-600 for Air New Zealand Link was delivered, painted in the scheme applied to a handful of the carrier's aircraft to signify its support for the nation's All Blacks rugby team. The turboprop (ZK-MVA, c/n 1051, ex F-WWEJ) is the first of seven ATR 72-600s ordered by the airline in October 2011. Its initial revenue-earning service was a domestic flight from Christchurch to Wellington. The aircraft is seen on approach to Toulouse six days prior to hand-over.
