The programme by the US Forestry Service to operate its own fleet of C-130 air tankers, using aircraft obtained from the US Coast Guard is being cancelled. Three of the seven C-130H aircraft that were to makeup the US Forestry Service fleet were seen in operation from their base at McClellan Field, with two equipped with temporary Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System units and one being used for crew training. None of the C-130s had the permanent internal systems fitted as called for in the US Forestry Service plan. The fate of these aircraft is currently unknown however the US Coast Guard has replaced some of is C-130H-series aircraft with HC-27JS.

Former US Navy EC-130Q BuNo 161495 at McClellan Field in Sacramento, California, on August 28, 2013 awaiting final approval as an air tanker. After spending ten years on display in Racine, Wisconsin, it was obtained for conversion to the firefighting mission by the Coulson Group, which also owns and operates Martin Mars fire bombers. Tanker 131, N130FF, is now equipped with a 3,500-gallon internal retardant delivery system, and is expected to be the first in a series of new civilian C-130 air tankers.

Lockheed EC-13OQ Hercules - N134CG (c/n 382-4904) - drops fire retardant to douse bushfires in Penrose, NSW, on January 10, 2020. Unfortunately, the aircraft collided with terrain after dropping retardant during fire control operations near Peak View, NSW, on January 23, 2020. The aircraft was completely destroyed and its three crew onboard was fatally injured. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) is currently investigating the accident and a final report will be published following its conclusion. The aircraft entered service in the early-1980s with the US Navy as BuNo 161496 and was placed into storage at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base (AFB), Arizona, before being resurrected and repurposed as an air tanker for Coulson Aviation in 2017.

Five days later XV295 departed RAF Brize Norton, Oxfordshire, for St Athan airfield in South Wales for storage. The event was organised by Phil Dawe and station commander Gp Capt Andy Bacon to support the rebuilding of Northolt's famous Battle of Britain Sector Operations Building (Building 27), now renamed the Sir Keith Park Building.

The author argues that criticism of a lack of investment in the fitting the Hercules fuel tanks with explosive suppressant foam and lack of investment in the Nimrod's fuel system is probably unfair and represents a normal (if ill-judged) prioritisation of spending which would be inevitable, even in a more generous funding environment.

Lockheed C-130K Hercules C3 XV202 is seen about to touch down on August 12, 2011 at RAF Cosford, Shropshire, at the conclusion of the variant's final flight in RAF service. XV202 will go on display within the RAF Museum at Cosford sometime in September. Before then the airframe will be stripped of any useful parts that can be used to support the current C-130K fleet, and time expired components installed instead to ensure the transport is complete for display purposes. The aircraft will be the only example of the C-130K due to be preserved in the UK. A handful of short-fuselage Hercules C1s and stretched, special-missions-dedicated C3As remain in service.

The 15th Transport Wing of the Belgian Air Component celebrated its 60th anniversary by painting the fin of Lockheed C-130H Hercules CH-07 (c/n 382-4476, ex 71-1803) with the Sioux Indian motif of the unit's badge, over which the names of all the different aircraft types that have served with the Wing are listed. The Hercules is seen information with a pair of 31 Squadron/10th Tactical Wing F-16 Fighting Falcons on July 18, 2008.

Lockheed C-130H Hercules CH-13 (c/n 382-4047, ex CH-14, N130EV) sports a commemorative colour scheme to celebrate 40 years of service by the type with No.20 Squadron/15 Transport Wing of the Belgium Defence-Air Component. The first of 12 C-130Hs (CH-01 to CH-12) arrived at Melsbroek Air Base on July 25, 1972, and the last in April 1973. One (CH-06) was lost in a fatal accident on July 15, 1996, following multiple bird strikes while landing at Eindhoven Air Base in the Netherlands. A second Hercules was destroyed on May 5, 2006, in a hangar fire at Brussels Airport, where the aircraft was undergoing deep maintenance with SABENA Technics; CH-13, its replacement, was displayed at an open day at Melsbroek Air Base on September 21 and 22, held to celebrate 65 years of the formation of Nos. 20 and 21 Squadrons on May 1, 1948.

In early August, 2013 the Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group handed back the first Lockheed C-130K Hercules (8T-CC, c/n 382-4257, ex XV292) to the Ostereichische Luftstreitkrafte (Austrian Air Force) after upgrading its avionics at Cambridge Airport. The contract covering three aircraft was awarded to Marshall in August 2012. The changes include replacing the autopilot and radar altimeter, updating the flight management system software, installing a standby flight display and a barometric altimeter and replacing analogue flight instruments with multifunction liquid crystal displays. The next C-130K for upgrade will arrive at Cambridge in early September. The other two will be redelivered by early 2015.

Apparent in this view are some of the 20 small back radomes on both sides of the fuselage, indicating its use as something more than just a basic transport aircraft. The Italians are predictably reticent about giving any information on its role, which is presumably along the lines of an ELINT platform or similar.

Making its UK airshow debut at the Royal International Air Tattoo 2011 at RAF Fairford, Gloucestershire, over the weekend of July 16 and 17, 2011 was Lockheed L100-30 Hercules HZ-128 (c/n 4950, named God Bless You, ex HZ-MS05) of the Royal Flight/No. 1 Squadron of the Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF). The transport provided support to the Saudi Hawk team, which was also making its UK debut at the event. The green and white six aircraft display team is operated by No. 88 Squadron of the RSAF.

The aircraft arrived from Mitiga International Airport in Libya the previous day, having been used on international flights since late September after NATO's no-fly zone restrictions were eased slightly. It carries the new markings being applied to Libyan military aircraft.

Lockheed L100-30 5A-DOM (c/n 4992) of the Libyan Arab Air Force has received a new scheme at the OGMA maintenance facility at Alverca in Portugal. Not visible in this view of the aircraft taken on July 17, 2008 is the Libyan roundel on the rear fuselage, although the air force titles in Arabic above the crew door identify its operator. Previously most Libyan Arab Air Force Hercules wore Libyan Air Cargo colours (the commercial division of the air force) as well as civil registrations to facilitate flights overseas, but since the normalisation of relations between the country and the west some of its transports have adopted airforce titles.

To support RIAT's rapid 'global effect theme' and as a gesture of appreciation to the many nations that provided humanitarian relief after a massive earthquake devastated part of Pakistan last year, the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) exhibited its Lockheed Martin L-382B Hercules 64144. This civil variant of the Hercules is the only one of its type in service with the PAF and is used by 6 Sqn based at Chaklala, for logistic support and medevac. Its striking artwork on the tail and fuselage, depicting the type's contribution to the relief operation, won it the Page Aerospace Trophy for the best static aircraft on display, and the crew were awarded the BAE Systems 'Spirit of the Meet' Trophy.

Lockheed C-130E Hercules 4180 (c/n 4180, ex A97-180) from No.6 Squadron of the Pakistan Air Force participated in Air Mobility Rodeo 2011 held between July 18 and 30, 2011 at McChord Field, Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington State. Arriving on July 19, the Pakistani aircrews took part in all of the C-130 events, except those requiring the use of night vision goggles. This year's Rodeo was the third time the nation had taken part, crews having previously attended the 2007 and 2005 events.

Transiting through RAF Mildenhall, Suffolk, on the evening of September 24, 2013 was the first two Lockheed C-130H Hercules for the Afghan Air Force. C-130HS 74-1675 (c/n 382-4640, seen here) and 74-1677 (c/n 382-4643) are among four former US Air Force examples that will enter service in Afghanistan, replacing the withdrawn Alenia C-27A/G222 fleet. Of the two, only 74-1675 displayed the housings for self-defence countermeasures sensors above the cockpit and on the rear fuselage. The second pair of C-130Hs will be handed over to Afghanistan next year.

Newly painted up in Sri Lankan Air Force (SLAF) markings as CR-881, this former RAF C-130K Hercules C.1 is seen returning from a pre-delivery test flight at Cambridge on March 7, 2000 and delivery to Sri Lanka was expected soon afterwards. Formerly RAF Hercules C.1K tanker XV213, it was de-converted from tanker configuration back to basic C.1 standard while in storage with Marshall Aerospace at Cambridge, where it arrived on March 30, 1996, after retirement by the RAF. The SLAF are acquiring three former RAF examples, one of the others being CR-880 (ex XV203) while the planned third example, CR-882 (ex XV201), is now reportedly to be replaced by a different aircraft. It is expected the aircraft will join 2 Heavy Transport Squadron at Ratmalana air base.

Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) Lockheed C-130R Hercules 61-9051 (c/n 4629, ex BuNo 160015) was due to begin flight tests at Davis-Monthan AFB, Arizona, as AIR International went to press. Flight trials and crew training was scheduled to start on June 16, 2014 at the air force base, where the aircraft arrived three days earlier after being overhauled and upgraded at Hill AFB, Utah. It is due to last for 90 days. The aircraft is one of six former USMC KC-130Rs acquired for the JMSDF and will be based at Atsugi in Japan.

This C-130H (c/n 4844) is one of the four in service with No 121 Squadron and was photographed earlier this year at RAF Lyneham by Adrian Balch, showing the three-colour camouflage, with black-only national insignia, that has replaced the previous white and light grey finish with red and white insignia.

An unusual visitor to Stansted Airport in Essex recently was Armee de l'Air du Cameroun (Cameroon Air Force) Lockheed C-130H Hercules TJ-XCF (c/n 4747) of the Escadrille de Transporte (Transport Squadron) based at Yaounde. The transport is seen leaving the airport on January 25, 2012. It was delivered as TJX-AC in August 1977, but was damaged by fire while on the ground at Marseilles, France, in December 1989. The aircraft was rebuilt by Sogerma at Bordeaux and redelivered to Cameroon in March 2005 with the new registration.

The transport is assigned to Escuadron Aereo 711 of Grupo Aereo de Transporte 71 based at BA Gen Walter Arce, El Alto. The three examples of the B-model flown by the air force all wear the same basic grey scheme, although FAB-66 has a red cheatline, FAB-65's is green and FAB-61 has none.

At the recent Paris Air Show CMC revealed that the first Lockheed C-130H Hercules of the Fuerza Aerea de Chile (Chilean Air Force) to undergo a night vision goggles compatible cockpit upgrade was redelivered in April 2011. CMC was selected in autumn 2009 as prime contractor for the C-130 Avionics Upgrade Program, providing installation kits, training and support. At the core of the upgrade is the CMA-9000 Flight Management System with six multi-function displays, the CMA-5024 IntegriFlight GPS-WAAS receiver, new radios, autopilot, weather radar, auxiliary power unit and numerous other subsystems. The modified transport completed its formal test flight in March 2011 during a sortie between Antarctica and Santiago.

The FAC has been a Hercules operator for the past 15 years and illustrated is the sole survivor of the three C-130Bs that, originally operated by the RCAF, were obtained after refurbishing from Lockheed-Georgia in 1969. This sole C-130B Hercules, photographed earlier this year at Bogota, has since been joined by two new-production C-130H-30s, restoring the FAC Hercules fleet to three aircraft. Taxiing in at Brussels/Zaventem Airport, Belgium, on April 8, 2007 is former Evergreen C-130E N130EV (c/n 4047, ex USAF/64-0552) following its arrival from Santa Maria, Azores, at the end of a ferry flight from the USA. The aircraft is to be refurbished at Brussels by Sabena Technics prior to delivery to the Belgian Defence Air Component as CH-14. It will replace C-130H CH-02 that was destroyed in a hangar fire at Brussels on May 5, 2006. The aircraft had left McMinniville, Oregon, on March 20 and initially attempted to reach Europe via Gander and Shannon but was thwarted by technical and weather problems, eventually opting for the southern route via Bermuda and the Azores.

A new addition to the fleet of Abu Dhabi-based Maximus Air Cargo is this L-382 Hercules, A6-MAX. Although the aircraft was built in 1985, it has been upgraded with new, fully-integrated digital avionics, state-of-the-art navigation systems, improved fuel, environmental and ice protection systems and enhanced cargo handling equipment. Established in 2005, Maximus now operates a fleet of eight aircraft, also including two Airbus A300-600Fs, three Ilyushin Il-76TDs and one Antonov An-124-100 Ruslan, plus a second L-100 that will enter service shortly. Although the carrier has been operating out of Abu Dhabi for two years, it was not until June 25,2007, that Maximus was granted a UAE Air Operators Certificate.

L100-30 EI-JIV (c/n 382-4673, ex ZS-JIV) of Air Contractors was operated on behalf of Oil Spill Response Ltd, based at East Midlands Airport, Leicestershire. The aircraft was used to provide a rapid airborne dispersant capability for oil pollution, but was due to be withdrawn from the role on July 1, 2013. The Hercules has been replaced by a pair of suitably modified Boeing 727s. The transport departed Birmingham Airport in the West Midlands for Amman in Jordan.

The AQM-34L/TV (Model 147SC/TV), a low-altitude SC Buffalo Hunter with a video camera and line-of-sight datalink, was introduced in June 1972, completing 121 operational missions in south-east Asia. This variant flew the last drone mission before hostilities ceased in Vietnam, and was used in 1973 for monitoring the peace.

The AQM-34M(L), a Model 147SDL with LORAN navigation equipment, was first fielded in August 1972 to address some of the navigational inaccuracies of the Model 147. This example, M-42L, seen mounted on the outer pylon of a DC-130 (with another good view of the additional MCGS radome on its nose) has six parachute markings on the fuselage above its wings, denoting six successful operational missions.

Three Lockheed LC-130H Hercules of the 139th Airlift Squadron, 109th Airlift Wing, New York Air National Guard deployed to Antarctica in October 2013 in support of the annual Operation Deep Freeze. The first (73-3300, c/n 4508, ex BuNo 159129) left Stratton Air National Guard Base at Schenectady County Airport, New York, on October 18, with another pair following four days later. Three more will deploy before the end of the year. The transports will support the National Science Foundation's Antarctic missions into February 2014.

USAF/New York Air National Guard/109th Airlift Wing/139th Airlift Squadron LC-130H 83-0493, callsign 'Skier 00', from Schenectady County Airport, New York, touches down at the South Pole on October 30, 2006 to commemorate the first aircraft landing there 50 years earlier. The first flight, on October 31, 1956, involved a ski-equipped Douglas R4D-5, since when the US military has performed regular flights under Operation Deep Freeze to support the National Science Foundation and US Antarctic Program in its mission to explore Antarctica.

Over the years a variety of aircraft types has been operated by the 53rd WRS to fly into hurricanes. Since 1959 four different variants of the Hercules have been employed in the role. Prior to the current WC-130J, the WC-130H was in service, an example of which is pictured. The current version has a number of advantages over its predecessor, including auto-throttles, digital moving map and more powerful engines.

Although the annual Canadian SAREX 2011 search and rescue exercise was cancelled, a smaller version was staged by No.413 Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, between September 25 and October 1, 2011. It involved RCAF, US Air Force and Civil Air Search and Rescue Association aircraft and personnel. Among the US aircraft that participated was former Lockheed WC-130H 65-0977/'FL' (c/n 4127) of the 39th Rescue Squadron, 920th Rescue Wing of Air Force Reserve Command, from Patrick AFB, Florida.
