From a total inventory of 225 Phantoms (32 F-4Ds, 177 F-4Es and 16 RF-4Es), the IRIAF now has 45 operable aircraft, these being distributed between no fewer than 13 squadrons at eight bases. Israel provided a source of Phantom spares and technical assistance until two years ago when Israeli aid ceased.

Only two of the six Lockheed P-3F Orion maritime surveillance aircraft originally obtained by Iran now remain serviceable. These are operated from Bandar Abbas. At least two of the other P-3Fs have been cannibalised as spares sources and two have been lost, one of these prior to the revolution.

The Iranian armed forces still operate substantial numbers of helicopters, despite spares and maintenance problems, and the attrition of nearly four years of war. Both the Army and Navy air components include the Agusta-Bell AB 205A Iroquois in their inventories, that illustrated being ex-Sultan of Oman's Air Force.

The C-130H Hercules currently equips five IRIAF squadrons at Mehrabad, Shiraz and Chabahar, with a detachment at Tabriz, but fewer than a dozen remain of the 43 C-130Hs (shown) originally procured, most being in storage and some of these having been partly cannibalised.

The Iranian naval air component received six Sikorsky RH-53D helicopters with Edo mine-sweeping floats (shown) and two of these are reportedly operable at Bandar Abbas.

The Islamic Republic Iranian Army is still operating a proportion of the 40 (of 90 ordered) CH-47C Chinooks (shown) acquired during the Shah's regime.

Iran originally purchased 25 F27 Mk 400M and Mk 600 transports, two of which went to the Army and four to the Navy. The Air Force converted four for target towing and relinquished two for civil use, and about 10 remain with two-and-a-half squadrons at Mehrabad, Shiraz and Isfahan.

The Islamic Republic Iranian Air Force is currently operating 55 F-5E and F-5F Tiger IIs divided between seven-and-a-half squadrons operating from Mehrabad, Tabriz, Hamadan, Dezful and Isfahan. Iran originally procured 140 F-5Es and 28 F-5Fs, one of the latter being seen taking-off.
