Tupolev Tu-22M3M Backfire-D RF-94145/Red '37' is seen at Dyagilevo Ryazan on July 30, 2012. The Tu-22M3M is an upgraded version of the Tu-22M3 with new mission systems that enable it to use a wider range of precision-guided munitions, including weapons that use the GLONASS satellite navigation system. Red '37' carries Gefest & T joint stock company titles on the side of its fuselage, the name of the avionics and armament integration company responsible for the upgrade. The first example entered service in February, and the Russian Air Force wants to modify 30 Tu-22M3s with the new equipment by 2020 as a stopgap until the PAK DA enters service.

The unit is currently based at Florennes AB as part of the 2nd Tactical Wing and the special scheme was unveiled there on June 23, 2012. The unit was originally formed in 1917.

The second prototype of the Spanish NHIndustries NH90 Tactical Transport Helicopter (TTH) (F-ZWFE, c/n 1242, GSPA02) arrived at the Eurocopter Espana facility at Albacete, direct from Eurocopter France at Marignane, on July 23, 2012. It is seen arriving at Albacete. Along with the first example (GSPA01), it will be used to achieve certification from the Spanish military aviation authority, the Institute National de Tecnica Aeroespacial. Spain has ordered 30 NH90s and has options for a further seven, and all but the two prototypes will be assembled by Eurocopter Espana at Albacete. The Spanish Army hopes to receive its first four in 2013.

Boeing 747SP-B5 C-GTFF was acquired by Pratt & Whitney as a replacement for its long-serving Boeing 720-023B C-FETB (c/n 18024) in the engine test-bed role. The new aircraft is seen here carrying the PurePower PW1200G engine on the side of its fuselage. P&W's 720 was the last flying example of its kind and was retired on May 9, 2012 to the National Air Force Museum of Canada at CFB Trenton in Ontario.

Boeing 777-235 TR-KPR (c/n 27108, ex N702BA) was finally delivered to the Government of Gabon on June 18, 2012. The former airliner was returned to Boeing by Varig in August 2006 and stored until sold to Gabon for use as a VIP aircraft. It was acquired prior to September 2008 to replace Douglas DC-8-73CF TR-LTZ (c/n 46053, ex N8638). However, when the Gabonese President Omar Bongo Ondimba died in June 2009 a bill for $10 million was outstanding to BaySys Technologies of Accomac, Virginia, for installing the VIP interior. This resulted in the aircraft being impounded at BaySys' Wallops Island, Virginia, facility, and the company filing a lawsuit against the Republic of Gabon and Afrijet Business Service of Libreville, Gabon. The case was later settled, allowing the aircraft to be delivered to Afrijet, which operates it on behalf of the Gabonese Government. It is seen at Manchester Airport - its visit in late July was connected to the Olympic Games, before departing for Stansted in Essex on August 5.

Boeing 727-17(RE) Super 27 VP-BPZ (c/n 20327, ex N727PN) was noted at Stansted Airport, Essex, on July 26, 2012. The former airliner is operated on behalf of Peter J Nygard, a Canadian fashion executive and Chairman of Nygard International, a company based in Winnipeg. The aircraft originally served with CP Air from delivery in March 1970 and briefly flew with Nigeria Air in 1977 before becoming a corporate aircraft, operated successively by the Fluor Corporation, the Amway Corporation and Enterprise Aviation. It was purchased by its current owner in May 2005.

Spanish airline Volotea Airlines currently has a fleet of nine Boeing 717-2BLs all leased from the Boeing Capital Corporation, including EI-BXI (c/n 55174, ex N910ME) seen landing at Palma de Mallorca Airport on July 14, 2012. Boeing announced on February 15 that it had signed a long-term lease contract with Volotea for an undisclosed number of the aircraft. EI-BXI joined the fleet on June 21, after a proposed lease to MexicanaClick failed to materialise. It earlier flew with Midwest Airlines before being withdrawn in September 2009 and entered storage at Southern California Logistics Airport/Victorville Airport, California. Volotea was created by former Vueling founders and commenced operations on April 4. It currently flies to destinations in Croatia, the Czech Republic, France, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain.

Sikorsky CH-53G 84+11 of the Heeresflieger Waffenschule (German Army Aviation Flying School) based at Buckeburg, has been painted in a special scheme to mark the 40th anniversary of the type entering service with German Army. The first CH-53G was officially accepted by the army on July 26, 1972. Germany received 112 CH-53Gs (two from Sikorsky and 110 assembled by VFW under license), of which around 95 remain in service. A total of 22 were upgraded as CH-53GSs from the late 1990s, six of which were further upgraded to GSX configuration for deployment to Afghanistan. Forty aircraft are currently being modernised by Eurocopter as CH-53GAs, of which the final example is due to be redelivered next year.

One of the units that will benefit from Typhoon future capabilities is the RAF's No. 1(F) Squadron. Tranche 2 Typhoon FGR4 ZK326/'FB‘ in the markings of the squadron is seen at the unit's new base, RAF Leuchars in Fife, in late July 2012. Seen on a test flight at Manchester Airport on July 30, 2012 is Boeing 767-31BER EI-CRF (c/n 25170, ex B-2566) after being repainted in the 1980s scheme of Condor Flugdienst. The aircraft arrived in the UK in Alitalia colours, which withdrew it from service on May 1, and was repainted by Air Livery at the airport. It departed Manchester later the same day for Abu Dhabi, where it will be equipped with winglets before entering service with Condor as D-ABUM.

The second Northrop Grumman X-47B Unmanned Combat Air System Demonstrator (AV-2, BuNo 168064/'502') has completed its first flight from NAS Patuxent River, Maryland, following its transfer from Edwards AFB, California. The 35-minute flight was made on July 29, 2012, during which it flew up to 7,500ft (2,286m) and 180kts (333km/h) over the nearby Chesapeake Bay. AV-2 arrived at the naval air station in June, joining AV-1, which has been there since December 2011.

Airbus A320-212 LY-COM (msn 528, ex VP-BRB) was delivered to Cosmo Airlines on July 10, 2012, having previously flown with Vladivostok Air on lease from the International Lease and Finance Corporation. The airliner, seen at Cologne Bonn Airport seven days later, is being used to provide ad hoc charters for European airlines. Cosmo flies on the Avion Express air operator certificate and the two companies also use A320-231 LY-COS (msn 415, ex EI-ETM), which entered service on April 27 and is currently flown in WOW air colours.

United Airlines displayed its first Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner (N20904, c/n 34824) to invited guests on August 2, 2012 at Paine Field/Snohomish County Airport, Everett in Washington. The carrier is the North American launch customer for the Dreamliner with 50 on order. It will receive its first in September and last in 2019.

Airbus Military CN-235-300MPA AMP-125 (c/n C-206) is the final example of four of the maritime patrol aircraft for the Fuerza Aeronaval de Mexico (Mexican Naval Air Force). It is seen during a test flight at San Pablo Airport in Seville, Spain, on June 21, 2012. The aircraft was ordered via EADS North America through the Merida Initiative, a joint anti-narcotics programme between the government of the United States of America and the government of Mexico.

Airbus Military A400M EC-402 (msn 002) was noted on August 7, 2012 during a test flight from San Pablo Airport, Seville in Spain, equipped with a new pod under the cargo ramp. The pod allows deployment of an air-to-air refuelling (AAR) hose drum unit mounted in the cabin. Both of the AAR pods mounted under the wings have been removed for the recent flight tests.

British Aerospace RJ100 G-BZAY (c/n E3368) has been painted in Empire Test Pilots' School (ETPS) colours, but has yet to adopt its British roundel or military identity. It has been allocated QQ101 and has a space in its cheetline for the roundel, while the ETPS's crest already appears on its tail. The aircraft is seen on approach to Boscombe Down in Wiltshire in late July 2012, while undergoing crew training. It was handed over to QinetiQ by Falko asset management services in mid-December 2011, after being stored at Cotswold Airport (Kemble) in Gloucestershire. The aircraft previously flew with BA cityFlyer before being withdrawn in late March 2010. It will be joined at Boscombe Down by a RJ70, QQ102.

Aerovias DAP British Aerospace BAe 146-200 CC-ACO (c/n E2094, ex OY-RCB) has had Sinami Mineral Airways titles applied. Sinami stands for Sindicato Interempresa de Trabajadores de Montaje Industrial, meaning 'inter-company industrial support workers syndicate', and the airliner is used to transport mine workers across Chile. It completed its first such flight on June 26, 2012 from Santiago-Arturo Merino Benitez International to Calama-EI Loa Airport in the heart of the northern Chilean mining zone, which it now flies to every Tuesday. The aircraft is seen departing Santiago on July 10.

Dassault Falcon Jet recently completed assembly of the 200th Falcon 7X (F-WWUB) at its Bordeaux-Merignac facility. The company has delivered more than 150 7Xs, and has a further 80 in various stages of completion. The 7X fleet is in operation in 32 countries and has accumulated over 130,000 flight hours since it entered service in 2007.

To celebrate 20 years of the Turk Hava Kuwetleri's (Turkish Air Force) Turkish Stars display team it has adopted a revised scheme for its Northrop NF-5 Freedom Fighters. It was first formed as a four-ship exhibition team under the command of 132 Filo in 1992. The team's first display was at Ankara on June 18, 1993 and following this the Turkish Stars gained their own status as a squadron, becoming 134 Akrotim Filo. In March 2004 they flew their first eight-ship routine and their 300th display took place in Belgium in August 2008. The new colours are seen on this NF-5B-2000 of the team.

Airbus A330-243F freighter F-WWTS (msn 1332) is the first of four of the type destined for MNG Cargo Airlines of Istanbul, Turkey. The aircraft is seen during a test flight at Toulouse-Blagnac in southern France on August 1, 2012. It initially flew on July 6 and will become TC-MCZ upon delivery. MNG Cargo signed a memorandum of understanding with Airbus for two A330-200Fs, plus an option for another, in January 2007, which became a firm order on June 26, 2007. A second pair was ordered in September 2009. All of the aircraft will be powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 700s.

Making a rare appearance at Manchester Airport on July 31, 2012 was Fokker 100 YR-FKA (c/n 11340, ex C-GKZC) of Carpatair, which was undertaking a charter flight. The airliner was delivered to Carpatair of Romania in June 2006, although it subsequently spent time leased to ALPI Eagles and Adria Airways. The airline began operations in February 1999 as Veg Air, before adopting its present brand in December 1999.

Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) has delivered the initial batch of ten AH-64D Apache Block III fuselages to Boeing. The airframes were built at Sacheon and arrived at Mesa, Arizona, for inclusion in the production line in early July 2012. Block III Apaches with the KAI-built fuselages will be rolled-out from next year. The Block III fuselage features small changes over earlier variants, including an extended forward avionics bay and provision for new electronics.

The vast majority of the new-generation Mil Mi-8s, in the form of the Mi-8AMTSh, were delivered to two army aviation branch airbases in the South Military District, the 387th at Budyonnovsk and the 393rd AvB at Korenovsk. This example, seen during an exercise in Nalchik, serves with the 393rd AvB.

Seen on approach to Farnborough in Hampshire on July 25, 2012 was Airbus A319-133X 2101 (msn 2263, ex D-AICY) named Santos Dumont, of the Forca Aerea Brasileira (Brazilian Air Force). Designated a VC-1 by the Brazilian forces, the aircraft is based at Brasilia and operated by 1°/1° Grupo de Transporte Especial (GTE, special transport group). It was the second FAB aircraft to visit Farnborough in a week following the arrival of Embraer ERJ-190 (VC-2) 2591 Augusto Severo, also of 1°/1° GTE, three days earlier. Both visits were in connection with the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Noted arriving at Stansted Airport in Essex on July 26, 2012 was Armenian government Airbus A319-132 Corporate Jet EK-RA01 (msn 913, ex HZ-NAS). The aircraft has been operated on behalf of the Armenian government by Armavia since November 2007. It carries 'Armenia' titles in English on its port side and in Cyrillic on the starboard. Its recent visit to the UK, in connection with the 2012 Olympic Games in London, is believed to be its first appearance in the country with its current operator, although it was previously registered to Twinjet as G-OMAK.

Boeing announced on July 19, 2012 that it has delivered the 50th 747-400 Boeing Converted Freighter (BCF) to McMinville, Oregon, based cargo carrier Evergreen International Airlines. Boeing 747-446(BCF) N492EV (c/n 25308, ex N238AS) was converted by Taikoo Aircraft Engineering at Xiamen, China, its 40th modification. Evergreen acquired the aircraft in December 2011 from AerSale Inc, after it was sold in October 2010 by Japan Airlines, with which it served from new as JA8086. It joins Evergeen's existing fleet of nine 747-200Fs and one 747-400F. The 747-400BCF programme was launched in 2004, when it was known as the 747-400 Special Freighter, being Boeing's approved passenger-to-freighter conversion. The first entered service with Cathay Pacific Cargo on December 19, 2005.

On August 10, 2012 the first Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II for the Koninklijke Luchtmacht (Royal Netherlands Air Force) completed its maiden flight at Naval Air Station Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base, Texas. F-001 (AN-1) was rolled out unpainted on April 1. After being handed over to the Netherlands it is due to join the multinational initial operational test and evaluation fleet at Eglin AFB, Florida.

Lockheed Martin test pilot Dan Levin became the first to drop a weapon from an F-35B Lightning II. On August 8, 2012 BF-03 operating from NAS Patuxent River, Maryland, released an inert 1,000lb (454kg) GBU-32 Joint Direct Attack Munition over the Atlantic Ocean test range.

Lockheed Martin MC-130J Commando II c/n 5711 will be the first example modified as an AC-130J for the US Air Force. It is seen on the production line at Marietta, Georgia, in July 2012. The aircraft will be one of 16 equipped with a precision strike package. An initial operating capability for the AC-130J is planned for 2015.

Indonesian Embraer A-29B Super Tucano PT-ZDN/04 is seen at the hand-over ceremony held at Gaviao Peixoto, Sao Paulo in Brazil on August 6, 2012. The aircraft is configured with three fuel tanks.
