Built in absolute secrecy by Airbus Helicopters, the X3 was a technology demonstrator within the the company for three years from September 2010. It reached a cruise speed of 220kts (410km/h), 50% faster than a conventional helicopter. It paved the way for the development of the RACER, which has a new cruise speed goal of 240kts (444km/h)

X-3: скоростной гибрид. Демонстратор X-3 представляет собой глубоко модернизированный EC155 (использованы компоненты от EC145 и EC175 и двигатели от NH90). На X-3 установлено крыло небольшого размаха с тянущими винтами на законцовках. Тянущие винты приводятся теми же двумя ТВаД, которые работают на несущий винт. Частота вращения несущего винта в полете с большой скоростью уменьшается для снижения скорости потока воздуха на законцовках лопастей, а нагрузка с винта перераспределяется на крыло. Тянущие винты обеспечивают поступательную тягу в скоростном полете и предотвращают вращение вертолета на режиме висения. В 2011 году X-3 в демонстрационном полете развил скорость 430 км/ч.

The RACER's two propellers are mounted on box wings joined at the tips by the propellers' bullet-shaped casing. The wings attain good cruise efficiency and have a small surface area above to minimise their interaction with the main rotor wake when the RACER is in the hover
