Cloud-shrouded mountains form a typical backdrop to a Canberra at La Calorta airfield, Caracas, Venezuela, where the author demonstrated the type in front of Venezuela’s president in April 1953. This Canberra is actually one of the B.2s of 12 Sqn RAF, which toured South America in late 1952. In January 1953 Venezuela became the first foreign customer to order the type from English Electric.

Canberra WF909 is now being used as a test-bed for the de Havilland Gyron Junior, and one of these turbojets is installed in the port nacelle. A second Gyron Junior is being installed in the starboard nacelle, and the aircraft will appear at next month's Farnborough show.

Rhodesia: Fifteen B.2s and three T.4s ordered by Royal Rhodesian Air Force in 1957 and delivered two years later. The aircraft were initially serialled RRAF159 to 176, but following UDI on November 11, 1965, they received four-digit numbers with an R prefix. Eight B.2s and three T.4s survived to fly with the Air Force of Zimbabwe. One B.2 and one T.4 supplied in March 1981.

The aircraft would take part in the Anglo-French Operation Musketeer a few weeks later.

In addition to the Valiants at Luqa, Malta, four squadrons of Canberra B.2s and B.6s, comprising 29 aircraft, arrived at Hal Far from England. They joined in high-level attacks against Egyptian airfields which began in the afternoon of October 31, 1956. Here, armourers bomb-up Canberra B.2 WH951 with 1,000lb medium-capacity bombs. This aircraft was destroyed in March 1957 at Luqa when its brakes failed.

CANBERRA PR.9. First flown on 8th July 1955 the Canberra PR.9 is intended to operate at heights "well above the ceiling of present-day fighters" . It is expected that it will be used in conjunction with the "V" bombers. The PR.9 has already been ordered in quantity for the R.A.F. and is going into production at the English Electric Co.s works at Preston. Wing span has been increased, as has chord inboard of the engines. The prototype PR.9 has standard PR.7 canopy, but production aircraft will have the fighter-type canopy of the B.Mk.8. Up-rated Avons are fitted.
Salient features: Having the unmistakable slim fuselage of earlier Canberra marks, with the unpanelled PR nose, the Mk.9 has an unusual wing planform. The inboard sections now extend rearwards to the jet efluxes, which with the higher aspect ratio of the outboard sections gives a less sharply tapered appearance to the whole trailing edge. Wingtips are now square-cut and the auxiliary tanks, previously under the wingtips are now slung inboard. The Avons appear to have larger-diameter intakes, and the starter "bullets" are less prominent than hitherto. The broad tailplane with dihedral and square-cut fin remain the same, as does the undercarriage with main legs retracting inwards into the wing and the nosewheel backwards.

It was acquired by the British Aircraft Corporation on February 23,1968 for potential refurbishment and resale. It was delivered to Argentina on November 17, 1970.

The tests will include evaluation of the Boulton Paul designed radar nose for night-fighter and all-weather purposes.

Acute lack of space also meant that the Martin-Baker Mk.3CT seats were almost upright, resulting in a most uncomfortable sitting posture.

Petter’s design shows an even cleaner layout than the twin-engined one that eventually emerged: it had wing-root intakes for the single engine buried in the fuselage. Lack of a suitable powerplant giving the required thrust necessitated several redesigns.

Aeroplane Monthly 1977-07

The prototype English Electric B.3/45 Canberra, VN799, made its first flight at Warton on May 13, 1949, with Wg Cdr R. P. Beamont in command. Powered by two 6,500lb thrust Rolls-Royce Avon 101s, it was Britain’s first jet bomber and the first to enter RAF service. The type was conceived as an unarmed, high speed bomber in the Mosquito tradition, and its low-aspect ratio wing made it highly manoeuvrable. Designed for radar bombing with a two-man crew, the Canberra was revised as the B.2 to Spec B.5/47 from the fifth prototype, with a crew of three and visual aiming in the nose. The type entered service in May 1951 with 101 Squadron at Binbrook.
