Longest-standing Met. Res. Flt. Varsity was WF425, airborne here with the Flight's Canberra PR.3.

VICKERS Varsity T.1 WL679 made its final and historic flight from the Royal Aerospace Establishment Farnborough on 2 August 1991. Its two hour flight including a number of passes over Hurn Airport. Bournemouth, where the aircraft first flew on 9 September 1953.

Vickers Varsity T.1 WF369 touches down at the disused airfield at Winthorpe, Newark, on April 1, 1976 after flying from RAF Finningley to join the Newark Air Museum. This was its 7,612th landing since it was built in 1951.

A puff from the tyres emphasises this "hands-off” landing by BLEU's Varsity WL665 at Bedford in 1958.

The Vickers Varsity prototype, VX828, exhibited at Farnborough in 1949, is back there now in service with the Empire Test Pilots' School.

JORDAN VARSITY. Recently flown to Amman for the personal use of King Hussein and Queen Dina is this ex-R.A.F. Training Command Vickers Varsity T. Mk. 1 (ex-WF416). The ?80,000 worth of conversion to create VK-501 was undertaken at Blackbushe by Eagle Aviation Services, Ltd. Immediate external differences include the disposal of the ventral pannier, wing fences and twin D/F loops. The Royal Jordanian Air Force standard on the fin is new. Power is two Bristol Hercules 264s and crew in specially designed flight deck total four. The Varsity VK-501 replaces the severely damaged R.J.A.F. Marathon (also VK-501).

THE ICEMAN COMETH. Better known as the Eland-Varsity flying test-bed, the second prototype Vickers Varsity T. Mk. I (VX835) has been flying recently from Cranfield, Lincolnshire fitted with a 39-nozzle spray rig. Evolved by the Napier Flight Development Establishment, Luton, this spray rig is used to test the behaviour of the N.El.6-standard Eland turboprop under all icing conditions.

WL679's nose contained a germanium panel, transparent to infra-red rays.

The bomb-bay could easily carry both FLIR (left) and LLTV(right).
