Meteor / G.41
- "Метеор" I с двигателями W.2B/23 и откидным фонарем;

Grierson's photo is a three-quarter front view in which the U.S.A.A.F. fuselage insigne can just be seen to the right of the test pilot's head. [This view does not show the whole aeroplane-ED.] In Jet Flight Grierson states (on p. 145) that he flew the exchange Meteor for the first time at Muroc on 23rd April 1944. In the background of my photo are (right to left) two Army Air Force Douglas A-24 Dauntless dive-bombers, a Vultee BT-13A Valiant basic trainer and the tail of a P-51 Mustang. Don't ask me for the block numbers.

The third prototype Gloster F.9/40, DG204/G, was powered by a pair of Metrovick F.2 axial-flow turbojets in distinctively underslung cowlings. When one of these burst its compressor drum over the RAE on January 4, 1944, “Dougal” Davie was killed while attempting to bale out. -

DG204 [4] The Gloster G.41, DG204/G was the third of eight prototypes of what were to become the Meteor. DG 204/G was the only one to be fitted with two 1,800lb s.t. Metropolitan Vickers F2 axial turbojets originating from the work of Dr A. A. Griffith at the RAE. Readily distinguishable from the other prototypes by its underslung engine nacelles, DG 204/G first took to the air on 13 November 1943, a little over eight months after that of the first G.41, a DH Goblin-powered machine, on 5 March 1943. DG 204/G's brief flying career ended catastrophically on 1 April 1944, when it was lost following an in-flight engine disintegration, fatally injuring its pilot Sqn. Ldr. Douglas Davie.

The Gloster Meteor initially sported two teardrop-shaped engine nacelles (as seen left), creating separation and drag, as discovered in wool-tufting trials in 1944. Altering the shape so that longer nacelles (as right) gave straighter junctions and reduced pressure gradients delayed separation and added up to 50 m.p.h. (80km/h) to the aircraft’s maximum speed.

I-031 [2] When the rebel FAeA Meteors landed at Montevideo in Uruguay in the wake of the failed June 1955 military coup, the Uruguayans had little first-hand experience of jet-powered fighter aircraft, its own most advanced fighter being the North American F-51 Mustang. Naturally, the Uruguayan Air Force made the most of the opportunity to explore the most modern military aircraft then in South America. The four Meteors that escaped to Uruguay - I-031, I-058, I-094 and I-098 - were all comprehensively inspected by the Uruguayans, as seen here, before being returned to Argentina the following month. The Uruguayans received their first jet aircraft in the shape of the Lockheed T-33 trainer in the late 1950s.

The “I” designation was originally applied to denote "Interceptor", but when the type was modified in the late 1950s to carry rockets and bombs for the ground-attack role, the designation was changed to “C” for Caza (Fighter). Thus I-066 became C-066.

Latest in the series of British pilotless target aircraft to be announced is the Meteor U Mk.15, illustrated here. Camera containers are at the wingtip, as on the Firefly U Mk.8. The Meteor U Mk.16 is a similar conversion of the Meteor 8.

G-BWMF, WA591 [2] Progress on the Yatesbury-based Meteor Flight's (MF) Meteor T.7 restoration is good, but the group is seeking extra active and “armchair” members to help put WA591/G-BWMF back in the air. Seen here in October 1995, it has now been dismantled, deskinned as necessary and inspected. Reassembly and an engine run are planned for 1997. For more information contact MF secretary Mark Jones, 26 Springfield Way, Westbury, Wilts BA13 3QQ (tel 01373 864135).

The unusual length of the installation was determined by the system’s feature of fuel injection ahead of the Derwent’s turbine, which reduced blade temperatures before the fuel was ignited in the afterburner section.
