SETTING THE PACE: A welcome stranger, the new Hawker monoplane fighter, being taken for an early test flight by Flt. Lt. P. W. S. Bulman. Powered with a Merlin, the latest liquid-cooled Vee-twelve Rolls-Royce, it uses almost every modern aid to performance. This Flight photograph indicates how carefully its designer, Mr. S. Camm, and his colleagues have considered aerodynamic cleanliness in order to reap the fullest advantage of the immense power output. Doubtless the Merlin does not "over-rev" in attaining the magic 300 m.p.h. mentioned in Parliament by Sir Philip Sasson.
FIVE YEARS' PROGRESS: The evolution of the Hurricane since its first flight in Nov. 1935 to the present day. The original model had struts to the tailplane and a retractable tail wheel.

NEW GENERATION: This exclusive Flight photograph of the production-type Hawker Hurricane single-seater fighter and the "P.4" two-seater bomber in company near Brooklands anticipates the spectacles of formations of such impressive aeroplanes when, in the not-far-distant future, they are in service with the R.A.F. The Hurricane, which, like its flight companion, mounts the Rolls-Royce Merlin, has already been ordered in quantity. Flt. Lt. Bulman's homely headgear in this picture is a tribute to the civilising influence of the modern enclosed cockpit.

This is not as might reasonably be supposed, the first Hawker monoplane, for some ten years back there appeared the Duiker, a high-wing two-seater, built experimentally for the R.A.F. Nevertheless in the new monoplane Flt. Lt. P. W. S. Bulman has a doubtless fascinating subject for investigation and the R.A.F. the fastest fighter in the air. A single-seater, it mounts the equally new Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, so far not type-tested. The tail wheel retracts in addition to the main undercarriage, flaps are fitted, and the pilot is enclosed.

STEEP AND SLOW: One outstanding feature of the Hawker Service types is their docility, which goes hand in hand with extreme performance. It may be assumed that a generous measure of that same "niceness" has been instilled into the new monoplane. The flaps, it will be seen from this Flight photograph, are of large area, and should steepen the glide considerably. Doubtless the somewhat "stilty" retractable undercarriage is accounted for by the immense airscrew used to absorb the terrific output of the Rolls Merlin.

A Flight composite picture of what the rear gunner of a Do 17 might see of a Hurricane eight-gun fighter as it broke off its attack. The story of a fight between a Hurricane and a Do 17 is told in the following pages. It is related how a young New Zealander caught up with his quarry at 27,000ft. and, giving it "all he had," sent it crashing into a village. By a stroke of good fortune none of the villagers was killed.

A WINNER, HANDS DOWN - or up, according to which way you look at it. Flt. Lt. Philip Lucas shows that our new monoplane fighters are by no means intractable. In this unique Flight photograph he has put the Hurricane on its back and removed both hands from the stick; one hand is hiding the other, but both were definitely raised - or lowered.

The Hawker Hurricane entered RAF service in December 1937 with No 111 Sqn, four Hurricane Is of which are seen here in the tight “finger four” formation the RAF favoured at the time. Unusual (and helpful) view of Hurricane Is of 56 Squadron - note the lack of overwing roundels. No. 56 Squadron took on Mk.ls from May 1938 when they were based at North Weald, Essex. From September 1938 they carried the code-letters 'LR-', adopting 'US-' from September 1939. The unit moved to Martlesham Heath, Suffolk, in October 1939. All of this helps to 'place' the photo as having been taken at North Weald. The last digit of the serial, L160x' of 'O-for-Orange' is frustratingly unreadable. This is so because, with the exception of L1604 and L1606, all of the Hurricanes with serial beginning L160x' were delivered from new to No.561

The 15 British-built Hawker Hurricanes that were in active service with the Belgian Air Force in the spring of 1940, one of which is seen here, were fitted with four 0-303in guns per wing. The Belgian-built aircraft were fitted with two 13-2mm FN guns per wing. Only one of the Belgian-built examples was delivered before Belgium fell, however, and was allocated to the test centre at Evere, so it is unlikely it saw action.
