With the tension in the Far East becoming greater each day, heavy reinforcements of both men and machines are arriving at Singapore. Aircraft are shipped direct from America and the four photographs show the uncrating, erecting, housing and flying of Brewster Buffaloes. These single-seat fighters may not pack quite the punch of a Hurricane II or a Spitfire V, but they are loved by pilots and should be equal to anything the Japs put in the air.

SHIPSHAPE: Superb formation flying by three Fleet Air Arm pilots on their Grumman Martlets. Even the airscrews appear to be synchronised. It is doubtful if such flying has been witnessed since the days of the Fairey Flycatchers.
The Grumman Martlet entered service with the FAA in September 1940 with 804 Sqn. The carrier-borne fighter was the British version of the US Navy and Marine Corps F4F-3.

LAST FLIGHT OF A GALLANT AIRMAN: At dawn on October 14, Pilot Officer David Usher Barnwell, D.F.C., with other fighter pilots from Malta, engaged enemy aircraft which were attacking the island. The control room heard his voice saying: "Tally Ho! - Tally Ho! - Got One! - Got One!" Five minutes later his voice sounded again: "Baling out; engine cut; am coming down in the sea.'' A rescue launch searched all day until dark, but found no trace of the pilot. David Barnwell was the youngest son of Frank Sowter Barnwell, for many years Bristol's chief designer. His two brothers were both killed in service with the R.A.F., one with Bomber Command and the other with Fighter Command.

The picture of a formation over the delta, is of particular interest in that it shows how easy it is to see the varying depths of water from the air. The dark portions are the deep channels, but the water is so clear that it makes it quite difficult to ascertain exactly where the banks are. The dark straight channel in the top right-hand corner of the photograph is a canal of constant depth.
Incidentally those interested in "spotting" and identification will note that, in the picture, the distinctive step-up in the fuselage of the Maryland just in front of the tailplane is clearly visible and so, also, is the fixed tailwheel, although the photograph was taken from above.

THE SIGN OF THE WINGED SWORD: Students of the R.A.F. heraldry may recognise the squadron marking on the fin of this Bell Airacobra. This American single-seater fighter is credited with a maximum speed of 400 m.p.h. at operational height.

MESSERSCHMITT ME 110s OVER JUGOSLAVIA: Although the Me 110 packs a powerful punch in the shape ot two 20-mm. cannons and four machine guns in the nose, it is evident from this photograph that only a single machine gun, with the old-fashioned ring and bead sight, is available for protection in the rear.
Messerschmitt Bf 110s based on the Cherbourg peninsula raided Woolston on September 15, 1940, killing nine and injuring 19, but without damage to the Supermarine works.

Although not often seen at clubs, the Miles Magister is one of the standard R.A.F. training types and particularly suited for primary work before passing on to modern types.

STIRLING BOMB RACKS: Over half the length of the 87ft. fuselage is devoted to bomb storage. Our photograph shows the commencement of "bombing-up." SOFT-VOICED VENTURA: The new Vega Ventura, which resembles an out-size Hudson, is now being built for the R.A.F. at Burbank, California. Here is one just before its maiden flight, and report says that the new paddle-blade airscrews (note their blunt tips) render this aircraft comparatively silent.

THE BALTIMORE (187): It resembles the Maryland but has a deeper-sectioned fuselage which drops down at the upper gun-turret amidships. The trailing-edges of its wings are "webbed" to the ends of its long engine-nacelles.

THE MARAUDER (B-26): A larger machine than the other two Martins, it is beautifully streamlined and has a neatly faired gun position in its tail. Note the mounting of the wings almost amidships and the long nacelles.

The Stearman-Hammond Y was an American design, but it was used by K.L.M. to train pilots for the tricycle DC-5 airliners.
Though unconventional, the appearance of the Hammond is not displeasing. In the picture of the take-off, the amount of undercarriage movement can be realised when the position of the wheels is compared with that in one of the two sketches on the following page.
