Miles Master II advanced trainer W9056, powered by a 870 h.p. Bristol Mercury XX radial, was delivered to No. 15 Maintenance Unit on December 24, 1941, and served with the Central Gunnery School from November 27, 1942. It went to Miles for repair on September 19, 1945, and was returned to the CGS on March 21, 1946. On February 14, 1950, it passed to 48 MU, being struck off charge on June 5, 1950.

Miles Master II 2773 was one of numerous examples of this ubiquitous trainer shipped to South Africa. Over 450 Masters were supplied as the first modern trainers to be sent out under the Joint Air Training Scheme and allocated SAAF serials commencing 2601 and probably extending into the 3000 series. The first were delivered about mid-1941, and began to replace the ageing Harts and Hinds at the Air Schools, enabling trainee pilots to sample a high performance aircraft before progressing to single-seat fighters such as the Spitfire, Hurricane and Curtiss P-40.

The author did his conversion to single-engined aircraft on the Bristol Mercury-powered Miles Master II, represented here by AZ247. After serving with No 8 FTS and No 2 Flying Instructors School, this aircraft went to No 7 Pilots Advanced Flying Unit, where it met its end in a crash while making a forced landing at Denton on October 22, 1943.
