The Southampton formation, which made two display passes and a 360° turn above Hythe, broke the previous record of ten non-military-owned Spitfires, established during the filming of Battle of Britain in the 1960s. A more recent attempt, at a Middle Wallop show in 1986, managed only eight. Even national air forces equipped with the type have not bettered the total of 13, although Spitfire specialist Peter Arnold has records of 11- and 12-aircraft formations by the Burmese and the Israelis. Did the Southampton and Duxford shows in May provide us with the last chance to see Spitfires in such profusion? Unlikely. Duxford was where the Spitfire first entered RAF service, in August 1938. Which means, as the airfield's press officer Frank Crosby tells Vintage News with a gleam in his eye, "There's another anniversary coming up in two years' time..."

The RAF prided itself on its pilots’ ability to fly in tight formations, like these Spitfires. German fighters encountered in France, apparently wildly weaving and jinking around, initially attracted some derision from their RAF opponents. In fact, the looser German formations made it easier to look out for prowling enemy fighters.

Регистрационный номер : N3297 [13] Two views of N3297 photographed in October 1941, during testing at Boscombe Down. Note the 'bumps' at the rear of the makeshift cowling. The aircraft was a hybrid, combining the modified Mk.III fuselage (similar to the later Mk.VIII), 'A' wing (without armament), and Merlin 61. In the original Mk.III prototype, to make room for enlarged fuel tanks in the fuselage, the upper portion of the fireproof bulkhead was inclined forward, as was the corresponding panel line between the main tank cover and the engine cowling. This was retained in N3297 throughout her life. Similar slant upper bulkhead/cowling arrangement would be used in just a few initial Mk.V-to-IX conversions, but would later be adopted as standard in Griffon-engined Spitfires. The upper surface painting scheme seems to have been Temperate Land in which N3297 was first finished in 1940 (not being a Fighter Command machine, the Spitfire was not affected by the switch to grey-and-green Day Fighter scheme in mid-1941). Undersides were yellow, as prescribed for prototypes (ortochromatic photos rendered this colour rather dark, as clearly displayed by the outer ring of the fuselage roundel). The propeller spinner looks like Sky, not usual on prototypes.

The only Spitfire built on an export contract was the single Mk I for France, which first flew in May 1939 and is seen here as discovered at Orleans by German occupation forces in 1940.
"I enclose a photo that has puzzled me, in the hope that one of your readers can shed some light on it. It depicts a Spitfire and was given by a German airman to an Italian pilot fly ing Fiat B.R.20 against England in the winter of 1940/41. The picture appears to have been taken next to a hangar, and in the background are some high-wing monoplanes, possibly Moranes. The roundels, camouflage and “FW8” serial don’t appear to be British, and the rudder fabric seems to be cut out where the stencils use to appear.
All this makes one think of a captured Spitfire originally supplied to France. I don’t believe any RAF Spitfires were based on the French mainland in 1940. Could this possibly be the Spitfire that was used by the Germans for faked “combat” photographs, together with a BF 109, He 111 and an FW 190?" -

Регистрационный номер : P7540 Loch Doon, in Ayrshire, has finally yielded its secret after more than seven years of searching. In 1942 Spitfire Mk. IIA P7540, flown by a young Czechoslovakian pilot, crashed into the six-mile-long Loch and sank without trace, In the 1970s local teams of divers began to search for the wreckage, but after three years of fruitless hunting in the murky water they were ready to give up. Teams from Blackpool and the North of England came to help, and this summer Blackpool diver Barry Barkworth collided with the Spitfire’s tail. The rear fuselage and tail was virtually intact, and after being strapped to guard against damage it was raised by airbags to just below the surface, where further splinting was added before it was lifted on to the beach (photo). Despite aircraft's protracted spell under water, the RAF markings were easily discernible, as were the part numbers on the elevators. It is planned to display the Spitfire in the Dumfries and Galloway Aviation Society’s museum, and the search for the engine, wings, and cockpit section continues.

Aged 26, Timothy O’Brien is one of Britain’s youngest aviation artists. Lest We Forget, shown, is one of his latest paintings to appear in print form. It is a pleasing study of the aircraft of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight over the Lincolnshire countryside. Timothy started painting aeroplanes at the age of 13, when he joined the Air Training Corps, and his work can now be found in collections worldwide. Along with Guardian of Freedom, depicting a Spitfire over London, Lest we forget has been published in a limited edition of 500, available from Mandrake Ltd of Norfolk at £25 each including postage and packing.

THE LINDSAY AIR FORCE OVER FOLLY FARM, HUNGERFORD. The aircraft collection of the late Hon Patrick Lindsay. "This was a truly wonderful assignment, which took over a year to complete. One reason for this was that I so enjoyed clambering over and studying Patrick's aeroplanes that I was in no hurry to complete the painting Because every machine had a special significance for its owner, I wanted each to be seen clearly, hence I drew them in this close formation The collection in 1983 was, from left to right Sopwith Triplane; S E.5a, Hawker Fury, Fiat G.46; Fieseler Storch; Spitfire IA; Harvard, Great Lakes 2T-1A, Morane MS 230, Pilatus P.2; Stampe SV-4. The S.E.5a and Fury were unfinished while I was working on the picture, so the markings are fictitious. The following year, 1984, I completed an even more complicated painting, of Patrick Lindsay's automobile collection, in which I included the Spitfire, the Morane and the Manning-Flanders Monoplane replica which Patrick flew across the Channel in 1984 to commemorate Bleriot's historic first crossing in 1909". The most immediately noticeable modification introduced on the Spitfire Mk III was its shorter wing, based on that of the Mk I but “clipped" at rib 19, significantly reducing the type’s wingspan from 36ft 10in (11-2m) to 30ft 6in (9-3m). The new wingtip incorporated a streamlined cover for the navigation lamp. Test pilot Jeffrey Quill voiced concerns that the reduced wing area led to a longer landing run and would make the Spitfire harder to discern from the Messerschmitt Bf 109. A Mk I wing was fitted to N3297 in 1941.
