    The big 2-blade wood propeller dominates this view of Spitfire I K9801 of 19 Sqn and its size can be gauged from the man standing by the port undercarriage leg. This was the second of the type to visit Elmdon on 17.9.39 from its base at Duxford where 19 Sqn was the first to form with the type.

    Spitfire I K9987 was with 66 Sqn, the second to have the type, also at Duxford, and was another 17.9.39 visitor. A camera can be seen on the starboard wing and the propeller is now a DH 3-blade Hydromatic variable-pitch type, later converted to constant speed.

    Magister I L5929 was the 18th example from the first production batch and as one of the early aircraft has the broad chord fin and rudder inherited from the Hawk Major family. The trainer was based at Hucknall, from which it visited on 18.9.39.

    From 21.7.39 the Tipsy Trainer I G-AFVN c/n 12 was registered to Air Training (Oxford) Ltd, although recorded as being from the Oxford Flying Club in the Log for 23.9.39. The photo shows it still going strong at Old Warden 27.6.69 although another 30 years on it is now in store.

    Heston Phoenix I G-AEHJ with 200 hp Gipsy Six engine and retractable undercarriage. It was the third and last Mk I, c/n 1/3, and was followed by three Mk II. The ex company demonstrator, it was owned by British American Air Services at Heston from 6.39 and was noted at Elmdon on 28 and 29.9.39. It did not survive long enough to be impressed as it crashed in the River Mersey at Liverpool on 13.2.40.
