FRANCE'S FIRST DOUGLAS BOMBER: The first Douglas DB-7 bomber for l'Armee de l’Air. It does over 300 m.p.h. with two Twin Wasp SC3-G engines giving 900 h.p. each at 2,550 r.p.m. at 12,000 ft. It is among the first twin-engined military machines to have a tricycle under-carriage.
Like the Martin 167, the Douglas DB-7 was ordered by the French Government before the war in considerable numbers. The machine is believed to do 300 m.p.h. with two Twin-Wasp engines of 900 h.p. each. A noteworthy feature of this machine is the tricycle undercarriage. This would entail learning a new take-off and, particularly, landing technique.

A HEAVY AMERICAN: The Consolidated XB-24 bomber (four Pratt and Whitney Twin Wasps) which weighs about 40,000 lb., has a span of 110 ft. and carries a crew of from six to nine persons depending on the job to be undertaken. There is a turret in the tail. The machine is known by the makers as the Model 32 and the wing, of high aspect ratio, is of similar design to that used on the Model 31 flying boat.

ON REFLECTION the Hurricanes, and, for that matter, all the Allied fighters, seem to have the Me's, He's, Do's and Ju's perfectly "buttoned up." We illustrate what must be a common background to the reflector sight of a Hurricane; a doomed Ju 87 dive-bomber starting its last dive. Having only one rear gun, this single-engined Junkers stands little chance against the terrifying whip-lash of bullets from eight Brownings, though German pilots are making use of its diving capabilities in trying to escape. The more modern twin-engined Ju 88 is a somewhat tougher proposition but is by no means formidable.

A triple-engined bomber which has proven itself in actual warfare is the Italian Savoia Marchetti SM79. The version illustrated has Alfa Romeo engines built under Bristol licence.
Major de Seversky is very critical regarding the armament of the Savoia bomber. There is a large-bore machine gun firing from the lower position, a similar weapon on top of the fuselage, firing rearward (this is concealed by a fairing in our photograph) , and one fixed gun.

A CHANCE FOR COMPARISONS. A Curtiss P-40 with 1,100 h.p. Allison engine and a Supermarine Spitfire with Rolls-Royce Merlin on the tarmac at Uplands Airport, Ottawa. After this picture was taken the two machines were flown together, the American piloted by an officer of the Royal Canadian Air Force, and the Spitfire by an officer of the U.S. Army Air Corps. The occasion was a visit to Canada by technical officers of the U.S. Army Air Corps. They flew from Dayton, Ohio, in a Douglas.

THE FIGHTING HUDSONS - Flying only fifty feet above the sea in the Heligoland Bight area these Lockheed Hudsons of the Coastal Command belong to a formation of five which ran foul of a German "Flack" ship recently. The Hudsons, although reconnaissance aircraft, have acquitted themselves outstandingly well against enemy fighters and bombers.
