On September 26, 1940, 63 Heinkel He 111s and Dornier Do 17s attacked Woolston with devastating accuracy, scoring seven direct hits on the Woolston works. This He 111, an H-16/U-1 variant, came into service after the Battle of Britain period.

Spitfire factory workers with a special wing-skin drilling jig. The preformed wing leading-edge skin was laid in it, and the upper part clamped down over it to provide a drilling guide for the rivet holes.

A Spitfire has its three-bladed de Havilland constant-speed propeller fitted in 1940/41. Despite the Spitfire's complex shape, considered difficult to produce, the author comments that "at Woolston it seemed no more complicated than the flying-boats which preceded it".
