Blighted by the Rockne crash, trimotor airliners in general fell from favour in the USA. Famously, the beneficiary of the tragedy was the Douglas Aircraft Company, which produced the first of an immortal line of airliners. This is the prototype and only Douglas DC-1; the photograph is dated July 1, 1933.

Following on from the DC-1 was the DC-2 - the immediate predecessor of the world's most famous transport, the DC-3 - shown here in American Airlines colours.
